Is It Really Safe to Use a Cellphone on a Plane? - ABC News

    Duke, what are your thoughts?

I always thought they were just being overly cautious, like cell phones around gas pumps. I can tell you a cell phone or signal will not set off gas fumes, I've worked on/in gas pumps at a job and we'd routinely talk on the phone with our heads stuck in the pump, gas leaking out, or inches of gas in the plastic tub at the bottom to catch leaks. It's the rubbing motion of your clothes or the phone building up a static charge that can ignite fumes.

I didn't read the article but I can tell you that when people have their pone near the front of our airplane you can hear the digital signal in the headsets and I have no idea if it effects the navigation signals, I also heard how 4G signals can are interfere with GPS signals but I'm not certain. The bottom line is that the FAA says they need to be off so they need to be off.

For me the important part is that people are paying attention during the critical phases of flight, I don't want some man child holding up an evacuation because he couldn't be bothered to take out his ear buds.

I do not understand people who ignore flight regulations. It is for their safety. Do they have a death wish?

It's strange that you posted this, not too long after i read that they're looking to relaxing the laws on a lot of international flights out of the UK. However, i did also read that they're looking at installing transmitters into the cargo holds of planes, so that is far as the connection between your phone and your network goes. Instead of your phone to the ground. Which apparently causes your phone to increase aerial power due to the distance.

Don't quote me on any of this though lol.

I for one hope they don't. I enjoy not having to hear people mess around with their phones when i'm on a flight (i'm mainly looking at you annoying keytone people). Even if it's only just for 2-12 hours. Then 'normaility' resumes as soon as you land.

I use the time to read and or sleep. It is annoying listening to people who think they have to talk in a loud voice when on a cell phone. Not to mention that even little old ladies can have the most annoying ring tones.

I hate that too. Imagine being stuck on a plane with people like that. I think i'd stop flying.

Supposedly when Lightsquared turns their network on to full capacity it will knock out all commercial GPS's. Military wont be affected.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
