Why Did The North Koreans Lose to the US?

According to an interview with the BBC:
"When we stayed in Pyongyang during training our players were hit by lightning, and more than five of them were hospitalised," said coach Kim.

"Some stayed in hospital and then came to Germany later than the rest of us. The goalkeeper and the four defenders were most affected, and some midfielders as well. The physicians said the players were not capable of participating in the tournament.

"But World Cup football is the most important and significant event for a footballer, so they don't want to think about anything but football.

"The fact that they played could be called abnormal, the result of very strong will."

They asked the Iraqi national coach as to why they lost to Saudi Arabia back in the '80s, he said "Their country is lower than ours. The earth's curvature is different and we just couldn't get the hang of the ball in those conditions."

I wonder if he was joking.

The sports world would be so much better if everyone were truthful. Some examples that are great are in Baseball, where a major league player will say he was doing something manly but it turns out he was playing with his dog or doing something Darwin-Award worthy.

In this case, the North Koreans could have just said "We don't perform well when our families are at gunpoint." The coach looks like he is trying to set up something that will help him avoid the gulag on his return home until he can break away from his minders and seek asylum.
