    The 100-Year Event

So there's a phrase that gets used from time to time called the 100-year event. The FEMA floodplain is based on this--the floodplain is the area that will be flooded by a storm that has a 1% chance of taking place in any given year.

In 2011, the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast have been hit by 2 100-year events: the blizzard, and the earthquake.

They're now talking about Irene as a 100-year event for this region.

Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot. Can we just have a nice couple of problem-free months to end the year please?

    -Rand

P.S. This afternoon I bought a small tarp--it does NOT help that I already have a few missing shingles on the top of my roof, which I cannot reach since I don't own a 24'+ ladder--and a loaf of bread and jar of peanut butter to supplement my home supplies, which otherwise should last through a prolonged power outage. That's about it for me.

P.P.S. Governor O'Malley has stated, on the record, that Maryland is concerned that every part of Ocean City south of 17th Street will be underwater this weekend at some point due to storm surge. That ain't good.

Who else is hunkering down this weekend? BA? Minerva?

Duke, looks like you may not actually have to fill that foundation with a spigot. This'll do it for you.

I don't think I will be doing anything. My house itself might lose power but I have a flash light. No chance of flooding me on a hill in the 2nd floor apt.

Maybe I can get out of work early on saturday.

Well at least the have the footing drains in.

If you lived closer you could borrow my big ladder and fix your roof, the tarp wont do crap in that wind.

The tarp is an emergency roof if the real one gets damaged. It's staying in its bag until that time. I was planning on renting a ladder, but it's too late now. I don't have any way to even get it here because I'm cruising around in a Corolla.

My dad has a truck, = free labor, free truck. Unfortunately he's on vacation in east Tenn right now.

Renting a truck at Home Depot, driving 15 miles to Suncast for a ladder, doing the work, reversing, all would likely come out to more than it would cost to simply hire a handyman or home improvement company to do it for me between time and gas. I could rent a ladder for about 50 bucks alone, but until next weekend I don't have a way to get it around that is cost effective.

P.S. When I reached my dad after the Earthquake, I asked him if he felt it. He goes "felt what?" He was in the middle of a trout stream with a guide pulling in mass numbers of fish, and left his cell behind. He had no idea there was an earthquake.

I thought we might get some rain as it went by. We sure could use it. Instead temps that were supposed to be in the upper 80's are now hitting 100 for the next few days.

But seriously, hope everyone farther east stays safe and sound.
