If you haven't read the Sharpe's Series by Bernard Cornwell I would highly recommend it. It is mainly set in Portugal, Spain and France during the Napoleonic War and follows a British Officer of low birth. I have read the complete series at least three times.
Another is WEB Griffins The Corp Series. It follows a Marine during WWII although the first book starts in China in 1939.
Robert Steakly's Armor is a must read even if it is Science Fiction.
Another Sci Fi Series is Honor Harrington by David Weber.
John Ringo's Empire of Man is another Sci Fi.
