Get your free TV digital converters starting today !

Today is the first day to register for the Digital-to-Analog Converter Box Coupon Program, sponsored by our very own US Government.

Yes, you too can be one of the millions .. and millions ... of TV converts !!! Grab yours right now, even if you DON'T need it, and then watch as people wait until its too late, then you can turn a tidy profit by selling the converter on Ebay next February !!

    http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/index.html

    Details:
Starting January 1, 2008, all U.S. households will be eligible to request up to two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the purchase of up to two, digital-to-analog converter boxes.
The converter box coupon program will assist Americans in receiving over-the-air broadcast television programming when full-power television stations cease analog broadcasting after February 17, 2009.

Thanks, WT. I also found this: https://www.dtv2009.gov/ so you can do it online without having to call the toll free #.

I just submitted a request for two coupons. Everyone should do this! Never know when your satellite/cable will go out and your TV might not be able to process digital-only broadcasts.

I think applying for this when you do not need it is horribly irresponsible! Our tax dollars are paying for this and if demand is more than supply then more of our tax dollars will be used to supply more. As for making a profit on them on ebay it won;t happen, there will be millions of these available nationwide.

This is not a bad point having one on hand for emergencies

Exactly... I live in an area that is prone to power outages from ice/snow in the winter months. I have a backup generator... would also like to be able to watch the news and any emergency broadcasts as well if both the power and cable were out (which is usually the case).

I have a couple of pairs of rabbit ears that I use in this situation now - that won't do me any good after Feb 17, 2009 without digital converter.

I think the real irresponsibility here is that our tax dollars are being used to buy anyone converter boxes. Television is not a basic human right.

That said, I pay taxes, so I might as well pick me up a couple. After all, this is a government program, so it's not like they won't find a way to use up all the money budgeted for this if les coupons than expected are requested.

Nothing to do with that. Direct TV and most cable is already digital.

However, all broadcasts (that you would pick up with, say, rabbit ears) are in analog and most TV's only can pick up analog broadcasts. In 2009, the government is mandating that all broadcast be in digital, no more analog broadcasting. So if you one of thsoe folks with an analog only TV, you won't be able to view over-the-air broadcasts without the digital converter.

If you have purchased a TV in the last year and a half or so, chances are that it is digital ready and you won't need a converter box.

actually not all over the air broadcasts are analog. the networks and some of the independent stations have had digital signals on the air ways for a couple of years. in fact, if you are in or close to a city like L.A. you can often get a better signal with rabbit ears than you can over cable(for the channels broadcasting in digital).

That gets a +1 from me. ABC, CBS, and NBC should be paying for this, not the government.
