So, I'm on hour 2 of a chat with EA customer support. Here's a transcript to this point:
Le sigh.
-Rand
P.S. At least the game was, quite literally, free. I had a $5.00 credit on the most downloaded games of 2011 from my $10.00 Crysis 2 buy, and Dead Space 2 was on sale for $5.00 today.
Jasjeet:
Thanks for contacting EA Help! My name is Jasjeet how may I help you?
you:
Hello. I hope you can help, as I am now extremely frustrated. I spoke with Ashish and ankur but was disconnected
you:
I bought a digital download of Dead Space 2 this afternoon from amazon. I installed the game. However, I am getting invalid serial number errors EVERY time I try to start the game
you:
I have tried the shortcut to the exe, steam activation, and origin's interface. None work
you:
I have uninstalled with REVO and reinstalled, per Ashish. does not work
you:
I logged out of origin and logged back in per Ankur. Did not work
you:
I'm also getting a bit tired of 30-40 minute chats that get disconnected after just 1 or 2 suggestions, so a more rapid response would be appreciated
Jasjeet:
I apologize for the inconvenience caused.
Jasjeet:
I can understand your anxiousness with this, had I been in your place I would have reacted in the same way.
Jasjeet:
May I please know, where did you purchase the game from?
you:
As I mentioned above, Amazon. This would be Amazon.com from the U.S.
you:
i purchased it this afternoon, shortly after 12:00 noon Eastern Standard Time.
Jasjeet:
In that case I would suggest you to please contact amazon
you:
amazon does not provide customer support for EA products
Jasjeet:
These codes are retailer specific.
Jasjeet:
We do not have them.
you:
Is your validation server up at the moment? I see this exact same problem appeared upon release in January 2011
Jasjeet:
But we do not have retailer codes.
you:
I'm not asking if you have retailer codes. I'm asking if your server is down. The retailer code MUST go through the EA activation server to activate the game. I cannot ACTIVATE an EA game through Amazon. No such magic exists.
you:
Your DRM sees to this.
you:
And obviously some server on your end can read Amazon's code, because I would not have been able to get the game to even show up in Origin if it didn't.
Jasjeet:
Please provide me the code.
you:
ACTIVATION CODE PROVIDED
Jasjeet:
Thank you for the information.
Jasjeet:
Please give me just a moment while I look into this further.
Jasjeet:
Thank you for waiting.
Jasjeet:
Well the code is fine.
you:
they why am I getting the error?
you:
"The serial number you entered is invalid. Contact customer support for more information."
Jasjeet:
It's used
you:
How? I haven't been able to get the game to initalize.
you:
you folks confirmed this serial number was associated with my email.
Jasjeet:
Yes it is.
Jasjeet:
Please wait I will check your account on my end.
you:
So you're telling me the code is being used, by me, yet i'm utterly incapable of getting the game to start?
Jasjeet:
Yes.
you:
That is an impressive feat indeed, considering the activation wizard never finished.
you:
can you see why people hate EA, Origin, and EA's DRM?
Jasjeet:
Please wait and let me find the cause for this.
you:
ok
