Awesome Mapes! I've never heard of a QA Engineer, but that's awesome that you got the job. Since you're making all this money, you could buy me a few drinks
A software quality assurance engineer tests new software features or products. For example if a new feature is to be added to the operating system a QA engineer will research specifications, write a test plan so that each area of the feature is tested for standards compliance, functionality, ease of use, that if a fail condition happens it fails gracefully, diagnostic logs are generated etc... A QA engy may also write automation software tools or emulaters. Think about EA. How do you test a bizillon clients loging into battlelog. You write/use something that can emulate a bunch of clients. Qa engys then file defects and verify that the fix actually fixed the problem and didn't break anything else. My example with EA is prolly way off base because it's clear they have a crap QA department.
Nope but to give you perspective. It's two miles to the range from my house and six miles to my new place of employment . The range is in between home and work

Niles I speak for everyone here when I say no one believes your lie. Your are never gonna stop being a whore ever
And then its the developer/programmer's job to dismiss bugs found as 'how the feature is supposed to work'.
You would probably like this web comic series: The Trenches
RIght now they are in hiatus, so the comics are just zoomed in art from previous comics they have done. Read the articles beneath the comics for sure... Those are still being posted new. Its only been up for a few months so if you have some reading time you could start from the beginning - he has some pretty good commentary on the tug of war between the programming/design and QA groups...
It's a slight pay bump and 2 hours back of my life. So I can't complain. Yeah I did the math and old told gas+oil changes+tires equals about 6K year at my current commute. So it is like getting a 6K bump as well.
Kphant I'm an un-degree'd engineer all self taught.

My current commute is 1 hour there and 1 hour back 4 days a week, then the 5th day I work from home. This is because when I got engaged she already owned the house. After we get married, we plan to move to within 15 minutes of my work, since I am the primary income and my job is more of a 'career' than hers - especially if she decides to stay home or only work part time once we have kids.
I drive a focus and the gas is about $100 bucks a month, but by far the biggest inconvenience is the 2 hours a day for 4 days a week. I used to jog a few miles a night before I moved up here, so I have that and a ton of other things on a list of activities that can return to my life once I have a good chunk of those 10 hours a week back. I may even consider biking to work instead, since I won't need to get on a highway to get there (ideally).
So I didn't say it before, but definitely congrats on the position.

Read everyone of them. Now I understand why games are so buggy. These people could give a rats arse if it's done right. They just have a publisher on their backs to release one every year.
I see why Cod never changed much. Didnt need a big team to just create new maps and a few weapon designs. It all makes sense now. I also see why Dice took so long to develop BF3, and why it has so many bugs.
Simply amazing the trash thats put out and we have to pay big money for.
Oh,and grats on the job Mapes. You da man.

Well it really depends on the companies mindset if they're going to release crap. In a lot of places QA is viewed as something thats done at the very end and only holds up release. You betcha the game developers have this in spades. The reason for them is thier release windows are so tightly controlled (i.e release before xmas). This means that as problems arise in development and the schedule slips QA is meant to take up the slack and do more testing in less time. Now to be fair sometimes stuff happens and it's no ones fault and to be fair bugs happen. However the company has to trend the amount of bugs found by customers and constantly ask how can we improve testing
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!
Well - just got back on my PC and played Delta Force game, Path of Exil 2, Diablo 4, BO6 and some WItcher3 , Ghost Recon Breakpoint...
