                  I know this is an old artifact yet new discovery but how do they estimate is 12,000 year old.

                    Carbon dating of the soil as the dig down. Also one reason why they can should be able to say it was filled in on purpose. If all the material is the same date that would be a strange occurrence unless it was a flood.
                    You can't carbon date stone. That is why arrow heads are so easy to fake. Large arrow heads are usually not very old or just ceremonial. If you ever do stone work for arrows or knives you throw a penny into the extra bits that you are throwing away. This way someone in 100 years knows its not that old of a find.
