That's how I feel about it.

When was the last time a soldier (other than Pat Tillman, a famous football player) got any serious amount of media coverage when killed in action?

I couldn't even tell you the name of the last soldier killed in Iraq without looking it up on the internet.

It's not less sad that he died, just less important to my daily life.

Often times, when someone young as he dies, and its not from a drug OD, then there are some medical issues that can be brought to light. If its due to a combination of drugs that he was taking (prescribtion), always good to know not to use that combo. If its due to work stress, its a good reminder to the rest of us that life is not all about work. You need to take time to kick back and relax.

And as much as people like to say "I don't know why they are discussing it, its not important", every post made by every person saying that is contributing to the "problem". Same as seeing someone reading a national enquirer and complaining about how stupid it is. Or someone who decides not to vote and then complains about how bad the government is.

If you truly want to make a statement about media coverage and America's disturbing fascination with celebreties, then make no posts at all, make no mention at all. Forget it exists. If enough people do that, then maybe it will cease to exist.
[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

I disagree. Way too many people are way too interested to make it thrive.

If Heath's case turns out to be a horrible story on the troubles of sleeping aids and other medications, then it would provide some good commentary.

What I don't want to see is another Anna Nicole Smith frenzy. It completely disgusted me and was a sad statement about the average American's concerns.

My point seems more valid in the context of us being at war (one which I completely disagree with) where thousands of US soldiers have died already. They get little to no face time in the media.

What makes for better commentary? "Some rich 'important' person, who had it pretty easy, dies from prescription drugs" or "Another soldier dies in an unjustified war".

I'd like to think it's the latter.

This is the same argument for people who don't vote because there is no ideal candidate.

It sucks that a beloved son/father/peer was lost, but why to people who had no contact with him feel the need to grovel over his death?
