But I am thinking about it... I would love to get in some military service first but I would love to go down the roads of Criminal Justice with the hopes of being a Police Officer/Corrections Officer.


But as the others have said... Don't make up your mind too quick.

And thats pretty much the reason why I didn't go to college or pursue (at first) any higher learning.

I had no clue what I wanted to do, and after seeing many friends friends go through school and not actually work in the field they studied in, kinda turned me off.

So I hit the work force and learned on the job. A much harder things to do as school will help open some doors to get into companies. Clawing your way up takes more determination, and you usually need to take a few good falls before you stand up.

Study in something you like, something you enjoy. don't do it because you think it will make you money. If you love it AND it will make you money, all the better. Happiness >>>>> Money

If I went to collage it wouldn't be over the money. I would aim for the job that I want. If I ever got to a cops position I wouldn't make squat where I live. But it is something I have always liked. But again I would like to get some military service in before it.

Everyone says that you will change your major at least twice in your college experience. Thus far I have not, but I may be forced to due to poor performance . Minfootball and I are both at University of Illinois. I am majoring in History and he is majoring in Landscape Archatecture, but plans to change that soon. To get back on topic, don't worry about it yet. I thought I had my whole life planned out by Sophmore year, but I didn't end up in the military or and Illinois State. Plans will change, so just try to get into a school that has a lot of good programs so you wont have to transfer.

Going to school is not about simply studying hard and hoping you land a job in the field you studied. It is also about broadening your horizons and meeting new people (contacts) that will lead to better opportunities in life. It is one thing to go from high school straight to the workplace and another to go from high school into an environment that prepares you FOR the workplace. And this is not mentioning the various opportunities colleges offer in regards to your career choice and your point of view of life itself.

I, personally, hate school and studying. Nothing worse than sitting in a class where I have to listen to someone drone on and on. But nothing compares to the feeling of having accomplished something in life that will not only help you out in your career but will also give you a sense of betterment for your own life and those of a family in the future.

I congratulate those that decided to NOT go to school and succeeded in life, but the question will always be there "Would you have gotten further, or faster, if you had gone to school." Mayhaps... but I encourage everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, to attend college because the opportunities are there, as well as the resources, to accomplish such an important, and now mandatory, step in life.

I learned more in the first 5 years working for NYC then a lifetime of schooling. After 20 Years in NYC, I was able to retire and dictate the terms of my new gig at only 40 years old.

If I'm interviewing someone, I consider REAL work experience in the related field much more valuable then a 2 or even 4 year degree. In relation to my industry there is nothing better then what you will experience working for some of the bigger cities. It counts for alot !!!

Please don't take this as a reason not to extend your education, I continue taking all kinds of courses & training to enhance my working potential.

Education does not have to mean school. In fact your education should continue even after school. You should always read and seek to expand your knowledge as much as possible. Also, do not limit yourself to just things you like. For how can you know if you will like something unless you learn about it? Always seek to expand your horizons.

It's great that you have that kind of ambition that young. I didn't figure out what I wanted to do until my senior year. I knew what I wanted to study (robotics/mechanisms), but didn't even know what field it was until I saw an interview of the engineer that designed the robots for Disneyland. Under his name he had the title of "mechanical engineer". I had my direction and gave it 110%

If you plan on attending some of those schools you need to start thinking about how you're going to pay for it. Unless you're parents are going to foot the bill? Either way you need to keep your GPA WAY up, competitive with the top % of your class. Also join competitive academics, clubs, charity work etc. It'll show your capability for some of those top notch schools. Remember, you're going to be competing against some of the best students in the nation. What separates you from them?

Get involved with internships/Co-Ops. It can get you in the door to your first job and some experience.

Having a degree doesn't make you successful, but it can close some doors and limit opportunity. I see this where I work all the time. It's the reason I've continued with my education and trying to finish my masters. I've been passed on a job based partially on that fact.
