Try Guild Wars.
It has an MMO feel to it, with the persistent world, quests to better your toon, advance in levels, get armor, quest with guilds and friends, but its free to play.
Its probably the closest thing to WoW without the monthly fee.
And a $15 monthly fee is not all that bad when you think of it. You get good support, updated content and so on. For a first timer, the game is really fun and immersive. But you quickly get into the carrot in front of the donkey syndrome where its a never ending quest to get the next best thing.[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

I use to play guild wars, I still probably will eventually but I find it boring at the moment. It's very balanced. The more expensive armor only LOOKS better, it isn't better in stats. They balance the professions, casters can't get better armor than melee, and melee gets more health than casters.
It's free, but you can use heros and henchmen (if you have EotN or NF), which everyone now uses, totally ruining the campaign and point of the MMORPG feel. However, the PvP version is fun... except a lot of trash talking and racism towards other factions. (in the game, for example I chose the Luxon side, which uses giant siege turtles in combat, so I get called a Turtle F***er)
It's fun, but if you want Roll playing, I'd get WoW or guildwars, and if you don't mind repetative stuff and lame graphics (great for Java though, which no one understands these days), you could try RuneScape, it has a FREE version, but you are limited to small areas and can't access the best weapons, armors, or skills. It's enjoyable, especially if you set goals ingame and stick to them.

There's a free trial of WoW available here.
$15 a month is really nothing, especially for the amount of entertainment you get out of it. It costs twice that much for a couple to go to a movie. Give it a shot. WoW is the fast way to being single again. I swear I will never, everrr pay a monthly fee for a game.
I feel bad for the WoW addicts, but its their choice. Its hard to look at your time invested two or three years after ditching the game, and wondering how you'll ever get those years back.
I realize we all have unproductive time, but when it interferes with real life beyond a certain point, it is in fact your worst enemy, not your fortress of solitude.Oh if a man tried to take his time on Earth and prove before he died what one man's life could be worth, well I wonder what would happen to this world ? - Harry Chapin

Funnily enough, there are a lot of people that slam MMOs as being "too addictive", yet they spend more time daily shooting people in BF2/BF2142/COD4 than I've ever spent playing an MMO. I think the majority of "addicted" MMO players are the ones with no social life or romantic interest to pull them away. The ones that have successful lives and then ruin it with a game are not common. If your ladyfriend comes into the room wearing nothing but a smile, and you tell her "Not now, I'm about to ding", then you have a problem. Plus, in-game dinging will be the only dinging you'll be doing.

I don't play mmo's because of that monthly fee, and the boredom I get when Im just talking to someone and not shooting them in a game
call me violent, but I'd much rather outsmart my enemy in the heat of battle with only a second, than having to arm myself with special crap so that I can only go fart around with a simulated life.
Also, the more popular parts of society play FPS's... like the NBA and NFL. I read that they play CoD4 all the time...

I love MMORPGs, but I haven't played a good one in years. The last game I played relatively similar to an MMORPG was "Utopia" (at Swirve Games) and it was heavily-text based, and mostly strategy. I've got to admit, I loved it...problem was, it just took too much time. You've got 20+ other people pressuring you to log in once every 12 hours to keep up your kingdom, and Lord forbid you go into war whilst during final exam exams.
I was always interested in FFXI, but didn't have a paycheck of my own to pay the monthly bill at the time. Own two copies at the moment, but haven't played either due to the fact that Kenshin and I really just don't have the time to devote to it at the moment. MMORPGs themselves don't absolutely demand a lot of time...it's just easy to lose track of time while playing. Others, though, just simply take it too far.
