my wife watches a show on BBC America. in the show people are often talking about eating "budgies". I thought budgie was a kind of bird or the name of a rock band are you guys eating cute little birds or is budgie a slang for something else?

I think you may be talking about 'butties'. A butty is basically a sandwich. They even have regional specialities, the chip butty, the pie butty, the jam (jelly) butty.
What show does she watch, I think maybe the Royale family
