Senators Introduce Semper Fi Act of 2008

I'm a proud vet. Several people here are. I wasn't a Marine but there is no branch of the Armed Forces I have more respect and complete admiraiton for.

More should be done along this line. Semper Fi!!!

Senators Introduce Semper Fi Act of 2008

Bill Stops Berkeley Earmarks and Transfers Funds to Marine Corps

Washington, D.C. ? Today, U.S. Senators James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina), Saxby Chambliss (R-Georgia), Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-Oklahoma), John Cornyn (R-Texas), and David Vitter (R-Louisiana) introduced the Semper Fi Act of 2008. The bill would rescind over $2 million in hidden earmarks for Berkeley , California in the 2008 Omnibus Appropriations bill, and transfer the funds to the Marine Corps. U.S. Congressman John Campbell (R-California) is introducing a companion bill in the House of Representatives.

Last week, the City Council of Berkeley voted to oust Marine Corps recruiters from their downtown office, saying the Marines were ?uninvited and unwelcome intruders.? Berkeley officials also voted to give the radical protest group Code Pink space outside the recruitment office and urged them to ?impede, passively or actively? the work of Marine Corps recruiters.

One earmark provides $243,000 in taxpayer dollars for the organization Chez Panisse <http://www.chezpanisse.com/> to create gourmet organic school lunches in the Berkeley School District Chez Panisse is dedicated to ?environmental harmony? and their menu features ?Comt? cheese souffl? with m?che salad,? ?Meyer lemon ?clairs with huckleberry coulis,? and ?Chicory salad with creamy anchovy vinaigrette and olive toast.?

Another earmark would spend $975,000 in taxpayer dollars for the University of California in Berkeley Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service, to create a new endowment and cataloging the papers of Congressman Robert Matsui. U.C. Berkeley currently already has a $3.5 billion endowment.

    Senator Inhofe:
?Unfortunately, those on the Berkeley city council do not seem to understand the sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Marine Corps. By interfering with military recruiting, the city of Berkeley is hampering our ability to protect this nation. While the city of Berkeley and the protestors are free to say whatever they like, free speech is not a protection from consequence.?

Senator DeMint: ? Berkeley needs to learn that their actions have consequences. Patriotic American taxpayers won?t sit quietly while Berkeley insults our brave Marines and tries to run them out of town. Berkeley City Council members have shown complete ingratitude to our military and their families, and the city doesn?t deserve a single dime of special pet project handouts.?

    Senator Cornyn:
?The Berkeley City Council insulted our troops and offended people across the country. If the U.S. Marines are not good enough for Berkeley , neither are taxpayer dollars Congress would have sent there this year. That city closed its doors on the same individuals taking bullets on the front lines while fighting for the safety and freedom of families in Berkeley and throughout America .?

Senator Vitter: ?The actions of the City Council of Berkeley are in stark contrast to beliefs of the vast majority of Americans who recognize and honor the service and sacrifice of our U.S. Marines. This is simply unacceptable and those funds could be better utilized by the Marine Corps.?

Dr. Coburn: ?The actions by the city of Berkeley are deplorable and insulting to those who are serving and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the very freedoms that are being exercised to insult them. I know I stand with the majority of Americans in thanking our service men and women for their selfless service to our nation.?

Senator Chambliss: ?We need to send a strong message that our military personnel deserve our strongest support. Georgia is a proud military state, and my constituents will be out outraged to know that during a time of war, their taxpayers dollars have been used to reward folks who have insulted and disparaged those who defend this nation every day.?

I have always been an advocate for free speech. But, an elected governing body should not disparage and hinder the US military and expect to continue to receive federal money. If you do not like the US Military that's fine but those that do should be allowed to make their own choices without hindrance too.

This is amazing. Normally you don't see this kind of support for troops and shows of patriotism from Congress until an election year.

          Oh wait a minute...

I heard something about this. I think Berkley is backing down now that they might lose federal money.

Even if they back down... they should give the money to the USMC any ways. Teach them for opening their pieholes.

Okay- so this little town is just 20 minutes away from me.

Some useful facts for people who dont understand Berkeley-

in the 1990s they passed a resolution that rewarded people who built composting stations in their backyard and charged a fee to people who made too much garbage. The arguement was posed what value "too much" is, by which the city council smacked down anyone and everyone who questioned this value via special interest protest and public ridicule.

Berkeley also has tree sitters, people who are sitting in trees at the CAL university, attempting to protest the tree cutting necessary to expand the athletic facility and do very necessary upgrades to the campus. Of the people in the trees that go to the University, have ever been a university student, and etc. exactly 0% are still in the trees, and of those that were, 0% were able to continue their education there. The city council, along with special interest groups have thrown everything from fault line geological assessments to endangered species at the project, stalling it all the way for the last 3 years.

Berkeley also had the naked man. A pervert who would walk around campus naked and whose rights were defended by the city council, even though it is in poor taste with it being a well documented top 3 indicator that you are freaking nuts (proclaiming that you are Jesus Christ being a top 3 as well).

Berkeley kicked the Boy Scouts of America out of their Marina last year, the Sea Scouts, who had been there for a large chunk of time, yet was asked to leave because it doesnt support gay rights. The reality of this misinterpretation is that the Boy Scouts of America does not support ANY sexual orientation, as it is neither the forum or the purpose of the organization. Despite this retort, and the fact that the Marina exists partly due to fact of the Boy Scouts of America's ongoing donation of time to the marina, the city council kicked them out of the marina and revoked their access to all public property within its' city limits. The Scouts must now pay for access or hold their meetings at private homes.

So in a nutshell, to play on words, they are living in their own world, unchallenged and invoking their personal preference on the rights of citizens who may otherwise live there.

We all laugh at Berkeley around here. Im a conservative republican, but you know you have a problem when liberals are calling you stupid.....but Berkeley isnt listening.....

The United Way also stopped supporting the BSA over this issue. Which is why the majority of people at my last workplace stopped donating to UW. Of course, now that I know how corrupt UW is, it wouldn't matter if they changed their minds. Salvation Army FTW.

                            UPDATED -

                            http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/02/13/ber...nes/index.html

It went on to say the council applauds residents and organizations that "volunteer to impede, passively or actively, by nonviolent means, the work of any military recruiting office located in the City of Berkeley."
                            Translation

We will continue to be covert douchebags who will go to any lengths that to create a disruption, with exception to those actions that may inhibit our ability to leech federal, state, or local funds.

Also- they use the word 'actively'- anything past passive is considered a violation or restriction, and can thus cannot be nonviolent.

These idiots should move to Fallujah since we arent on par with their standards of living.

The government should give the city's entire budget that it receives from the feds to the Military and use it to help our war vets plus it could help get badly needed armor and other equipment to the front to help those with inadequate protection.

City clearly has no appreciation. Therefor it doesn't deserve to waste millions of dollars on complete stupidity.
