Guitar keeping me busy

So I just got a new Epi Les Paul and it's freakin' sweet. Some day when I finish grad school I'll be able to afford a real one, but this will do for now...

Anyway, I know some of you out there play guitar - have any of you used guitar rig? I just got GR3, and it blows my mind. It basically lets you plug your guitar into your computer and simulates many different amps, cabinet and effects pedals and such. I've never owned a really nice amp, so I can't tell how good it is, but it blows my little amp out of the water.

Here's a short sample I just recorded.. It's got some mistakes, but it was just a first take.. If I recorded the full version I'd get rid of those...

I've been thinking of picking up one of these: DigiTech RP35

This sounds really similar to what you've got, L Mo. It gives you some preset sounds, ranging from pedals/amps/effects and allows you to mix and match them. You can also use it to record via USB and download other effects from their community.

The demo sounds great, it's nice and clean!

Sounds great dude! Post a pic of that guitar sometime. I have a '77 Les Paul Deluxe that I picked up a long time ago.

I have not used or seen GR, I have a POD XT which I think is awesome. Good luck and post more tunes when you record them.

The lead was a British amp a-la Pete Townsend. Can't remember what I used for the background bit.

Regarding the tube vs. sim argument.. On one hand I agree tubes are the real mccoy, but at the same time it's just an electronic component that can be modeled and characterized. The tech might not be there yet, but with sufficient sophistication I think the only difference between a tube and a simulation is the sense of nostalgia. Someday, at least. Which is good - rumor has it we're running out of good vintage tubes.

I used to be of that opinion but not anymore. While any particular amp will definitely sound better than its digital equivalent, the sheer vastness of versatility available using a sim far outweighs the negatives in my opinion. Mind you I plug my POD XT into a Marshall JCM 800 (set on clean) so the final coloration of the tone is still tubalized.

I have done a few comparisons between the digital version of a JCM800 and the real thing and they are damn close even down to the way the amp reacts to pick attack with its natural compression. I don't play live a lot but I think the current setup I have sounds way better than just the JCM by itself and is extremely flexible.

Ive never tried out GR, but i did pick up a boss gt-6 a while back for real cheap. Its fun as hell with all the different amp you can simulate, all the effects, and on top of everything else it sounds excellent. Heres a photo:

I wonder if there's a difference between a software-only sim like guitar rig and the solid state ones like that Boss gt-6...

But yeah, the #1 reason I'm really liking GR isn't because it's so incredibly realistic. I think it comes close, but the #1 reason is because it gives me $$$$'s worth of equipment for $.

Oh, and nice martin Dead Again! My acoustic is mid-grade at best, but I've played a few of those and they're really beautiful.
