Oh man, the guy created a huge genre of gaming that is linked to things like WoW these days.
I played D&D quite a bit when I was a kid and teen, had so much fun. A game that involved so much imagination and creativity.
Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

He's at least as responsible as Tolkien, if not more so, for the structure of fantasy worlds in books and games. He will be missed.

Yeah, saw this early today also. Even went right to the Wizards page. They didn't have anything on the splash, but have a bit of a tribute when you click the D&D link. This is a big loss for geeks, nerds, and gamers the world over. Takes a heck of a mind to come up with what he did, and perhaps even more brains to get out of his creation before it got commercialized to the degree where it is now, where even the worst sourcebooks cost upwards of 40 bucks.
Remember him fondly from such achievements as inventor of D&D, and his epic guest appearance on Futurama. He shall forever play D&D with Hawking, Uhura, and Al Gore.

When I think how much time and money I've invested in his invention....
I must have 20 D&D based computer games in the house and used to play back in the service. Probably at least 30 books in the genre around the house too.
I heard about it on a talk radio show this morning and the announcers were basically just cutting him down. I bet when they pass away they won't leave 1% of the mark Gary did.

Don't be an ass. Either post something relevant in this thread, or leave it be.

Leveling, hit points, different "classes" of characters...all created by this man. For the children, that means that the ability to have different classes and ranking up in, let's say...Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 4, for example, are the end result of what this man created.
Not to mention that the first popular computer games were based on concepts pioneered by Gygax (Ultima, Wizardry, etc.). The popularity of those games propelled PC gaming from a tiny niche market into the massive behemoth it was until recently.
I haven't played D&D since I was a kid, and we never played it seriously (we spent our time bribing the Dungeon Master with M&Ms and seeing how much outright BS we could get away with), but it's easy to see the massive influence he's had on anyone that enjoys any form of gaming.

I never had very serious games either, it was all for fun. We would usually start out with good intentions to play seriously, but we would ended up taking turns goofing off and getting nailed by bolts of lightning by that the dungeon master would rain down on us.
It really is like a poker night, thats a very good analogy.[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
