Not to raise a stink but, what would buy... a Ruger Mini 14 or a Remmington 700

Please no debate on Gun Control

I want to buy a rifle. Just for going to the range and shooting. I've narrowed it down to either a mini 14 or a Remington 700 (better known as the M24). Both are inexpensive guns and theres a lot of after market mods you can do to both. Initially I want to be able to just shoot it. Then over time mod it to what I want. I've fired the Mini 14 and it's a great rifle. The only problem is I live in CA and some of the mods I would like to do to it are illegal cause it would be an assault weapon then. Where as with the 700 since it's a bolt action it won't fall into that class. Keep in mind I have fired many many guns but, I'm basically a gun noob. The only worry I have with the 700 is the ranges. From what I understand the 700 is a long range rifle and I'm worried that there be few ranges that I can it use fully at.

    Thoughts....suggestion

    Thanks

The Mini 14 fires .223,... is that the caliber you want?

If you just want to punch holes in paper, .223 is fine. But if you want a rifle to punch holes and deer hunt with, you might want to step up the caliber a bit.

IF IT WERE ME,.. and this is only an opinion, I would get the Remington chambered in either .270 or .308. Then you could punch holes in paper and Bambi if you wanted to.

Check your area first to see if any of the ranges will accomodate the 700.

Where do you put the Bayonet?

Remington 700 is an outstanding rifle and should be in any shooter's collection.

The mini14 is a fine rifle. I don't know what kind of laws are in place where you live, but here, we can mod a rifle in any way. The only thing I can think of that would make a gun illegal is (A) If you saw the barrel of a shotgun off less than 18 inches, or (B) If you are committing a crime while you have a gun in your possession. (C) If you don't have a license to carry a concealed weapon and do so.

Here, any gun is legal as long as you have a license for it... even fully automatic.

This is a biggie. A friend of mine has to drive a couple of hours to shoot any of his rifles, so they don't get used very often.

I just shot the Remington 700 a few days ago with my uncle. It was really accurate.

Dude you shouldn't have to apologize for asking a real question about a real topic. There is nothing wrong with what you asked, as it is legal and a mature question about a lawful application of a tool.

save your money on the REM.700,and get a Savage heavy barreled in 308cal.they asoled come in 223cal.but if you do,get a heavy fluted barrel with a 1 quarter twist, youll be very happy u did.I have 308,223,both in savage,u will need put a good scope on the rifle,a cakliss or acog who make a great hunting scopes or for target shooting. Now at my range we can target shoot from 60 to 300 yards,We have a match down here in NC. called a 300yrd egg shoot, its an egg which sits on a golf tee on a post, its alot of fun.....thy.......moe.

One more thing-- make sure its a rifle you can afford to shoot.

This is a common mistake for people jumping in.

I thought the barrel length was limited to 16", or is that a state regulation and not federal ?

My father-in-law is a gun nut, so I think I'm gonna try and talk him into buying this: http://demigodllc.com/articles/gsg-5-mp5-in-22-lr/

That is awesome. That would be really fun to shoot, imagine the kick(or lack there of) with that .22.

California has a set of byzantine gun laws. Theres three really. I forget what the first one is but, the second one lists various firearms by model. The third law list firearms by characteristics.

So right off the bat no cartridges over 10 rounds except .22. Also no .50 BMGs. So the third law is no semi with,

                          forward pistol grip
                          thumb hole stock
                          pistol grip
and I forgot the last thing.

I just looked up some ranges. Most are within 45 min to an hours drive (some closer to where I work). There are about 7 public ranges with 100 yard rifle, and about 2 or 3 of those have 200 yard rifle as well. While we're on the topic of Ranges....what is the deal with private ranges. I'm assuming you need a membership? Is it just a fee or do you have know someone. The only reason I ask is theres a private range about 45 min's from me with a 1000 yard range.

Also lets say I go with the 700 chambered for 308 what type of distance am I looking at?

                            Thanks for the info guy's

Each private range sets it's own rules. Some are member only and you usually have to be recommended by a member in good standing. Others allow anyone who pays their fees. The best thing to do is call them and ask.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
