Not to raise a stink but, what would buy... a Ruger Mini 14 or a Remmington 700
So I should stop squirrel hunting with my .50 cal?

That 50 cal law is just BS.. Since no crime has EVER been commited in the US with a 50 cal. Only in the movies will you see 1 used and frankly its overkill lol. Its kinda like having a car chase with tanks, its just a little too much
Actually it's funny you mention a car chase with a tank....that did actually happen here in CA....I think in LA or San Diego
That's why it is better to reload your own. You get a bigger selection of bullets and better accuracy. And you get consistent results.
You get better patterns reloading shotgun shells too.

I have always wanted to do that, but I've never had the initial money to invest to start up.

Start small and add on. Ask for reloading items for your birthday and Christmas.
I started reloading when I was 16. I still have my original RCBS Press.

RCBS is the brand I like. They have always made quality reloading equipment.

The best part about the .50 cal law in Cali is that in response to it Barrett created the .460 which ballistically outperforms the .50 BMG and is legal there.
The Rem 700 is a good rifle. Going to be more expensive to shoot than the Mini, but the Mini's aren't all that great. No offense if anyone has one, I've shot 'em before, but most specimens can't get too much tighter than 4" at 100 yards. The AR IMO is a much better 5.56 platform.
You should pick up a ruger 10/22 as well - some of my best memories shooting were shotgun shells and bottlecaps at 50 and 100 yards with one as well. It will give you a chance to focus on the basics and improve your aim, trigger control, and breathing control for a fraction of the price. Attend an Appleseed shoot if you can, I'm going to my first one this weekend. w00t!

Actually a good friend of mine has the Ruger 10/22 and he loves it.
Aye, I was affirming your decision. Congrats on the purchase!!!!
Learning how to shoot well is alot of fun - like golf, but way better
Especially since you don't have to go pick up your bullets.

In reflection to the Mini-14. Mostly what it is or mostly was used for was close ranged combat. It was the prefered weapon of choice in it's day of many police departments and etc. But like everyone else has said; it depends if you would like long range or close range. I have a Mini-14 and it's a fun gun to play with and shoot at close range targets. One other good thing about it is that you can also take M-16 clips and put them 30 round clips in your mini-14 and they will work just fine. For long range reasonable shooting that will not destroy your kill, if your going to try to eat it, anything over a 270. 7mm mag is a bit big and makes a good size hole. I use a 30-06 A-bolt myself with a boss system for the grain of the bullet. I do love my Mini-14 though and would recommend it to anyone. It's a very reliable weapon. Scott

It's funny the Remington 700 is the same way... Lot's of LE uses it for sniping
