I'm assuming you need a membership? Is it just a fee or do you have know someone. The only reason I ask is theres a private range about 45 min's from me with a 1000 yard range.

Also lets say I go with the 700 chambered for 308 what type of distance am I looking at?

    Thanks for the info guy's
There's the one by Castle Rock that I would recommend.
The private ranges where we live are bushwhack and too costly Mapes

Cant fire this weapon without permission first, Cant fire that weapon without the permission of the master when this kind of member is around, blah blah blah.

I'll send an email to one of my ATF buddies in San Jose and ask him to send me a full list of ranges within an hour of Santa Cruz- then PM you the results.

Well Mapes, here's my thoughts. I've owned and grew up with guns and hunting. I have for long range, but not much knock down a .243. Great rifle, accurate and better than the .223(5.56mm) rounds the Mini 14 uses.
Remember the 700 has different configurations. I want one, but need to save for a while before it's in my get list, on the wish list right now, but when I do, it will be the 7mm mag barrel.
As far as ranges, you can usually site rifles like these to 100 yards on your upward tragetory and it will be zeroed for more depending on the drop. Most ranges will have a 200 and if not definetly a 100 yards field. I'm sure you already know this. So you can greatly enjoy any weapon at the range it basically depends on what you want. Do you enjoy the rocking, damn glad I had on the ear protectors, thunder or do you want to know you have the knock down, the reach out and touch something, or both.
Check out, if you haven't already, the ballistics at this site http://gunsandammomag.com/ballistics/ it's what I used when I purchased my last handgun a 10mm Glock G29. Great Glock by the way.
My preference I love the thunder and the thought of the range. That's why I prefer the 7mm mag version of the 700 over the standard 308 flavor.
        Hope this helps bro.

        Cheers

i have heard of people shooting near a thousand yrds with a 3.08.that is with really knowing the tragectories and ranges.if it is not a gun for hunting,or that far of distance.i would go with the cheaper to shoot paper puching mini 14.if i wanted long range paper punching, with the lowest amount of drop in tragectory.i would get an r700 in 22-250 calibur.they shoot fast and flat.from 0-500yrds you wont find a flatter shooting gun.

i had a 7mm mag in a winchester,i really liked it.great deer gun.if i am buying something for hunting deer,i will not get anything smaller than a 270.i am with dougbob on likeing the thunder.7mag is the only mag calibur i have owned, but i have had many other caliburs and you can defenitly tell when u shoot a mag.for paper shooting,i go with cheap on ammo if it is semi auto,or quality and flat shooting for long range.

You know, honestly, the most fun I've ever had at the range was with my Ruger 10/22 using empty 12 gauge shells at 100 yards trying to hit the firing pin mark
And it didn't cost a arm and a leg

Almost forgot, I've lived in CO for close to 10 years now and before I leave and move back to NC I plan on going hunting Elk or Mule deer and the definely choice is the 7mm mag.

How hard is it to find 10mm ammo for that Glock?

in the sticks where I live, I have a 2 hour drive to get .45 GAP ammo for my SA, which is another story, love the gap round, to bad it didnt take off..

Same here. I love "plinking". Simple is sometimes better.

For everything else I have my Browning A-Bolt .338 Win Mag [Yes, you heard me .338]

Ok my minds made up I'm getting a 700 SPS 308. The Mini is great but I have two friends that own em.... So if I feel the urge I could always go shooting with em. The two other things I wanna get for the 700 are a bi pod and some optics. I have a line on bipods already. Looking at optics is a little over whelming what does everyone recommend? By the way I really love the way this rifle looks and would like to set mine up similarly minus the sling

Oh yeah....my price range....I can spend up to about 400 bucks on the optics

Not bad in the C. Springs, just down the street, but when I was home in NC we are way out in the sticks and I had to drive about 45 minutes to find the store. They had the power ball ammo and I picked up some solid tips for target. I guess compare to 9mm the selection was not that good at all. I think they had about 4 or 5 different kinds and that was about it.

I love to shot it though it has the bark and the bite is better than the .40 and .45.

That's why it is better to reload your own. You get a bigger selection of bullets and better accuracy. And you get consistent results.
You get better patterns reloading shotgun shells too.
