If you could shrink the world down to 100 people ...
Best time of my life was an IRC party I attended in Hamilton on '97. This was back when men actually were men, and women were indeed women (and attractive to boot, eh ?) even on IRC !
Oh if a man tried to take his time on Earth and prove before he died what one man's life could be worth, well I wonder what would happen to this world ? - Harry Chapin

-IRC- PARTY FTW!
According to the initial survey, You wouldn't have to worry about the world getting populated. 99% of them would be ugly as hell, deformed, plague stricken, or just killed trying to feed themselves.
It means that less than 1% of the planet's population owns a computer.
I doubt this statistic
That would mean there are less than 66 million computer owners worldwide. I guess it's POSSIBLE, but I think you'd have to artificially constrain the statistic in order for it to fall below that level. Out of the 100 in this exercise, I'm guessing it still would only be 1 or 2....0 seems overly pessimistic.

Now I know that the bulk of PCs are sold to companies, but the numbers just seem way too high for the entire world not to contain 66 million PC owners.
Interesting list all the same. And agreed we (those of us in industrialized nations) have it really easy compared to most of the world.

Given that I worked on the adaption of this exercise, my guess is that it's been around a couple of years. In which case the statistic does make sense. Keep in mind that, at a minimum, most people in China, India, and Africa do not own computers. That's a very large chunk of the world's population just with those three parts of the globe. There are more computers in at least the first two of those than just a few years ago, but I can see how it could be less than 1% of the global population. Heck, a few years ago probably only about half the people in the U.S. that have PCs now didn't have them then.

Looking at some of the statistics on various sites, it's clear the numbers are exploding (espcially in china/asia) for PC ownership. I think the statistic I saw was 6 out of 1000 for China and 1 out of 1000 for India. That would come out to approx 8 million PC owners in China and about 1 million for India.
So maybe it was less than 1% a few years ago, but we've since surpassed it
