Actually you dont- at least in the ways I have seen this. I have seen it done in the demonstrations that were done for Television and online. The pilot is in a constant descent until he is ready to land.

When ready to land, he does something to deploy two trim stabilizers that pop out the back of the wing that force you to pitch upwards, and in arching the back you shoot up fairly quickly, deploy the chute at the right moment and then you float back down.

If it is done wrong the pilot will break his neck or possible suffer severe spinal injuries, or more, if the parachute cannot deploy, deploys at the wrong time, etc.
