There are 3 factors that I can think of going into the rising food prices:

    1) High market prices (normal fluctuation)

    2) Ethanol (ie, taking out FOOD and turning into OIL)

    3) Rising oil prices (it takes more money to ship the food all over the world)

My wife and I are talking about moving back into the city, and maybe at that point, we'll ditch the car.
Public transit doesn't work everywhere unfortunately. Out here in So Cal, its car or death. Everything is so spread out, so decentralized, that it would be impossible to build up a significant infrastructure to support the bulk of the population. Right now, it takes me about 15-20 minutes to get to work via car. If I were to attempt the bus, It would take several hours at least given the route and number of transfers I'd have to make. Not to mention all the colorful sights and smells I'd experience along the way

Every year or two a politician out here gets a wild hair up his or her butt and starts trying to get people our of their cars. It usually ends up with us paying more taxes and the traffic getting worse

And boycotts don't work. AT ALL. Only a severe reduction in consumption or a serious threat from an alternative energy sources will have any significant impact on the price of oil/gas. And even then, China's increasing consumption will keep the price from falling too far.
