Oh gawd, are they going with this whole gas strike thing?

What is it this time...no one buy gas for a day, or is it the week one? Or are they doing the boycot XYZ company to force them to lower their price and the rest will follow?

    Gotta love the interweb

Googled it and it seems its the one saying not to buy gas on Friday.

Yeah, that will show them big oil companies. No one gas up on Friday! But make sure you gas up on Saturday or even today, to ensure you don't gas up tomorrow.

The only way to ever affect these companies is stop buying gas or limit your consumption to the utmost minimum. And no, this does not include taking your car for the 3 min drive to the corner store...

        Why is there a boycott?

Because the price of gas on this side of the ocean has been skyrocketing over the last year. Its still cheaper than gas in Europe, but its such a fast hike.

Gas today in Montreal is about $1.35 per litre. I believe last year it was around the $1.00 and a few years ago it was in the $0.80. And they are saying the price could probably hit $2.00 by the end of the summer.

Take that, and add that Petro-Canada has had a profit increase of about 89% this quarter, which is insane. And other oil companies are reporting the game.

The fast hike in the price of gas means that goods and such cost more, as they have to be shipping. Its one of the factors behind the food / grain shortage in the world today (along with alternative fuel research and consumption and so much more).

i saw a post kinda like this on the old forums. Seriously though the governments should step in and make the gas and oil companies lower their prices. Every single gas company has gotten a new high of profit last year while the consumers are having a hard time paying for it.

I mean come on, the owners are rich enough already so now they are going to pawn even more money off us. its a little excessive

i dno't know how much this boycott will do. because first of all half the people who see it aren't going to listen to it. probably about 3/4 of people won't even get the text so i don't think this will work very well. it didn't last time people tried it

we might as well try though

Sorry freak but I'm inclined to disagree. Governments should NEVER step into a free market economy. As they are already too involved in our present one. From an economic standpoint this always creates long run problems for short term benefit. In a way the increased prices are not a bad thing as they make other energy sources more viable. Plus you also have to look at where the money goes, once the "Rich" oil companies get the "Poor" man's cash what do they do with it? They SPEND it on goods. Which should in theory help the economy. The real problem lies in the fact that many goods nowadays are imports which means the money is leaving the country. Finnally the oil prices are determined by the free market investors (You know, the guys on Wall St. ect.) the oil companies have virtually no control over the price. (OPEC and other Cartels are an exception but are on a national level)

The oil companies are not the problem. They are making record profits because they are selling record amounts of oil. World unrest, the exploding economies of India and China, the weak dollar, greedy speculators, and a government indifferent to the fact that we need alternative energy sources are the problem.

A gas boycott will never work. Even the "dont buy from so and so therefore they will lower prices and everyone else will follow suit." From what I understand, if so and so cant sell their gas to the people, they will sell it to another gas company for around the same price and that company will continue to sell it at normal price.

                    Think about it.

"lets boycott all fuel on monday"

                    what do people do?
top up their fuel extra on sun or tue.
the companies know people if not 90% of boycotter's do this, so they put it up a few pence here and there.

                    thats what happens, nothing else.
they dont lose profits, only for that day but the increase the day before and after makes up for it.

Only way it would sort of work is if everyone stopped using their own cars etc and used public transport for a week.
plus think of the benefits to the air and other stuff too in that.
Not saying do that, just its the only way they would be effected.
even at that, the prices would still go up again.

I'm not insane. I'm just overwhelming!

I have found the answer to the greatest mystery of the human race!

Why are oil prices going up?

                        http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2379/picture1rv7.png

Demand is rising, and production is declining!

We're not getting as much, because it's been used!

                        It's that simple

We need you guys to come here and make yourselves heard because the UK public certainly isn't. I'm actually selling my car this summer. A small price to pay for the massive ammount of cash i'll be saving.

do you guys think that the rise in ethanol and other alternative fuels is having a factor on the world food shortages? Many wheat growers have converted up to 25% of their growable areas to be used / sold for ethanol.

I don't remember the exact %, but I did hear it on the news the other day, and it hovered around the 20-25% mark.

I live in the suburbs, so a car is a must. Plus, our canadian winters make it pretty difficult to get around wtihout a car for 3-4 months.

I do however take public transportation in to work and in the summer, I take my bike in. I would so love to totally get rid of my car.

My wife and I are talking about moving back into the city, and maybe at that point, we'll ditch the car.
