Range report R700

So I went out yesterday and was able to fire my brand spanking new R700 as well as a win mag 300 and a lapua mag 338. Man that 338 really kicks. In any event sighting in went well until like a dufus I turned my adjustment knobs the wrong way DOh! Start over....That and the fact that I'm fairly new to firing a large bore rifle. Luckily there was some very cool folks at the range who helped me out and gave me some pointers for

a. Not jerking the trigger
b. Recoil control

Pretty fun stuff. I think I squeezed off some thing on the order of 135 rounds. I found out something....A ton of ammo + short sleeved shirt + recoil + astro turf = rug burn on elbow. At first I couldn't understand it. I was doing well but towards the end of the day I started to get worse. Because I started to flinching from the pain on my elbow. Well ya gotta learn somehow. Also I can't wait to my detachable magazine conversion kit shows up. My thumb knuckle is also quite raw from loading and hitting the sight mount rail....

I'll post some pics of all the paper I killed later tonight.

Always squeeze the trigger. In fact the gun shot should happen unexpectedly. Also you should inhale, exhale about half of your breath and then squeeze the trigger. The exhale helps to relax you and steady your shot.

+1 on that apache... as an avid duck hunter i shoot shotguns so i'm used to pulling the trigger more than squeezing it... first time i shot a rifle i had to relearn myself

Jeffro, you should squeeze the trigger on your shotgun too. You get away with jerking the trigger because a shotgun is more forgiving. You will get better results with the trigger squeeze on a shotgun. The best way to practice is with clay targets. After enough it becomes habit.

Sorry guys but what exactly is the diff between pulling and squeezing the trigger lol. This might be good to know

Squeezing is slowly pressing the trigger back so I dont really know what the gun will go off. Pulling is more of a jerking movement that will yank the gun a little and thus move the barrel ever so slightly, which when you are shooting down a long range can really mess you up.

It's interesting to note that video games are the opposite of this. Normally in COD4 or any FPS you wanna fire when the cross hairs are right on target.

From what I noticed when really shooting you don't want to rush the shot. You should take your time to get a good sight picture and slowly squeeze off a shot. As opposed to the SHOOT NOW mentality of FPS. This kinda hurt me at the beginning.

When you pull the trigger, you're just pulling and expecting the recoil and usually you jerk back from the pull or lean forward expecting the recoil. You have to gracefully squeeze the trigger and train your mind to not anticipate the recoil. You can't think about the recoil at all and only about is the sight's on target. As long as you hold the weapon tightly you'll be fine no matter what the recoil, usually
The squeeze is a slow, but not too slow, and steady speed at the same time you try not to keeping in your mind when any thought of when the click for the firing pin is going to happen.
