I'm going to start writing in my still-under-construction fantasy world today. I've sort of gone the way of Ed Greenwood, in making a world that was intended as a DnD setting, and realizing that it has a lot of potential for books, as well. One thing that I am going to aim for is a very non-conventional atmosphere, mainly by eliminating mainstays of many fantasy worlds. I really don't want Dragons,Elves,Dwarves and the like in my world, instead going for diverse but believable human cultures. There will be a magical aspect, but it is rare, and a thing to be feared and respected, as the magic users of my world are descended from an ancient, decadent, and now extinct civilization that trafficked with eldritch, Lovecraftian-like beings from dimensions (best word I can think of atm) outside the reach of most mortals.
Instead of starting with a full up novel, I want to begin with a collection of short stories centered around the town of Lornyllith, a small, independent settlement nestled in one of the extensive forests of my world. It began as an excavation camp atop buried ruins of the aforementioned civilization, and slowly grew in size as prospectors, outlaws and those that provided services to the two came to the lawless town.
So far I have two stories in mind to introduce my world and some of the players in Lornyllith. Ardin Chapel, and a Kaie Owain. Ardin is one of the "shadow lords" of the settlement, a former underworld kingpin in a neighboring country, forced to flee after a power grab by a new, brutal crime syndicate. Opening a tavern and brothel, he was one of the second-generation settlers who came not to prospect for riches in the ruined city, but to profit from those who did. Ardin's tale finds him in a difficult position, having learned that one of the town's newest inhabitants has information that could spark a brutal war between two nearby nations, with Lornyllith in the center. Kaie's story is that of the hunt for an outlaw that might prove to be more trouble than the reward is worth, and has roots in her own troubled past.
If I get a good bit done tonight, I will post it. Wish me luck.
