What do you love in a movie?

If you were to see one film, and only one film, for the rest of the year, what would you want in it?

I'm trying to become a man in Hollywood (well I don't want to be in Hollywood, but I'd love to be in the film industry). Anyways, my main focus is movie making. I have made movies, their on a site which is down until my roommate stops playing gears of war with the sound on full blast while I'm trying to sleep. Anyways, I just want to get the lairs opinion on what they would want in their final film. I know a lot of it has to do with emotion or mood of the viewer at the time, but as we know a lot of people were excited for Iron Man, the Dark Night, and of course Lord of the Rings.

So, why did people get all hyped up about that?

Was it because...

It was action based? Comedy? Love? Horror?
Characters we already know
Actors we love
Sequels, or based on a book?
Massive explosions?
Hilarious lines?
Hilarious scenes?
Death-defying scenes?

Basically what made you want to see that movie?

Anyways, for our next film (now that I'm taking film classes, I need to make films), we are aiming at a somewhat parody of shoot 'em up. With comedy in the bad guy, awesome lines, hilarious scenes, and explosions, gun animations, and all the good stuff.

Basically shoot em up in a nutshell with a different storyline.

The type of movie is something that draws me to the theatres. I need to be taken out of my world and brought into another world. A movie is about being entertained. I’m not there to pay money to watch something I can see on the news. I’m not a fan of dramas.

Even if the movie isn’t a pure comedy, I love it when movies have some really good, unexpected lines that just make you laugh at the oddest moment.

I like it when movies have not so obvious things going on. Little things that not everyone notices right away. You’ll have a few people who say “did you see that?” and if the others didn’t, then they pay more attention.
Ex: I remember watching Shrek 2. There is a scene where the giant gingerbread guy attacks the castle. As he is coming into the town, people run in panic out of a Starbucks (or whatever medieval name they put for Starbucks). The funny thing is that they ran into ANOTHER Starbucks right across the street. I almost peed myself, but yet the other people I was with didn’t see that.

What I don’t like is having a really popular actor who is not diverse playing in a big movie. Take Tom Cruise in the Last Samurai. Cruise is not a diverse actor (or all that great IMO) so all I kept thinking was “hey, there is Tom Cruise as a Samurai.” “Look at Tom Cruise with a sword”. Removes from the realism. However, someone like Johnny Depp or Tom Hanks can be very diverse in the roles they play.

So if you are going to have a name actor, have one that can act and make people believe in his character.

Comedy has to be smart. Slapstick is good and all, but a whole movie about it gets annoying. Dumb and Dumber is an example of smart potty humour. The Wayan’s series of spoof movies is an example of bad slapstick that gets annoying after a while. Scary Movie 1 was good, 2 was alright, anything else sucked IMO.

Orignality or a great actor is my main draw. That being said i still watch some mindless action films.

Unpredictability...nuance, human interaction. I've seen enough explosions in films, they just don't stimulate my mind any more...too much formulaic garbarge coming out these days...though I would like to see a good, modern day war film...not glorifying it, but realistic...the tragedies, the small victories...fallability...none of this John Wayne stuff.

But I'm a wierd bird. If you want to sell movies, do remakes with plenty of explosions. Another Rambo? Terminator meets Rambo? Who's the Boss 2?

Good story line, well played characters, interesting plot, just fun sometimes...I just watched Starship Troopers 2 and 3.....terrible terrible terrible movies, I'd never pay for them in the theater, but they sure were fun to watch and make fun of

Im more for the social commentaries, zombie apocalypictic movies with growing tensions and the relationships people have with each other when under those tensions, I don't like it when zombies movies would just be running away or blowing their brains out. Or otherwise End-of-the-world films.

How good a movie is over the long term is almost always based on a good story and how well that story is visualized. If I were a director I have to have a vision for how the movie should look and feel and try the best I could convey that to the various visual art departments. Also to find and direct actors who can transmit the emotion of the movie to the audiance.

Subject matter, special fx, famous actors...that's all just icing on the cake. Without a good story and good acting, the most you can hope for is flash and hype....1 good week at the box office and then obscurity. Go watch Arabian Nights and listen to the advice the master storyteller gives to Scheherazade.

Aww bigtwinky you made me love shrek again. I didn't see it the first time, but I remember watching the second time and laughing so hard. Infact I laughed when I read that.

I also love the catnip part. "That's uhh.. not mine".

But I agree with twinky. What I like in the movie is also an "oh SH** movie with lots of action. Cloverfield was one of my favorite movies. The only part I hated was the goddamn start. I think I slept in the theaters until the explosion finally happened to start things. And to be honest I think nearly everyone agrees about that film hehe.

But I love constant action. Cloverfield never really had any sitting around drama parts, and it made you look and find things. If you just sat in the movie without trying to look at the entire creature, the movie wouldn't be so interesting. The movie made us want to learn about the creature and it caught our attention.

I also love a hilarious line or scene. The Dark Night had 2 very good ones. Jokers magic trick and "I'm like a dog chasing a car, when I catch it I donno what I'll do with it".
