ISPs pressed to become child porn cops - Security - MSNBC.com

Pretty soon the government will be controlling what we think directly through devices implanted in the brain Problem with the strength and possibilities technology gives us now, is that it can also be used against us.

While I can see how this would get out of hand really quick I don't have a problem of ISPs filtering child porn. The trouble will come when they start filtering for illegal songs/Movies etc. The internet I like the wild west so its going to go through some phases. If certain ISPs want to avoid the filtering they could market their product that way then let the customers decide. Has a parent I would pay for that.

We had this with our ISP's and piracy but it never actually happened. Does the government really think that ISP's have the time and capacity, not to mention money, to watch every single users habits?

At least in the UK they don't.

I'm all for getting rid of all child porn, but policing the internet is a whole lot worse imo. It would end the internet as we know it, and as Duke said, child porn wouldn't be the only thing being watched.

And the other question is do they think they can do it without raising rates

If there was a way to make to work, I'd be all for it.

When my step dads brother died, my mom and step dad had to pay for his funeral. The decided to sell what they could of his to help pay. Well, first thing to go was the computer. The neighbor freaked out on my step dad wanting it and was rather persistent but didn't want to give any money. He kept telling my step dad that it didn't work and it would cost more to fix it. My step dad figured he'd have us look at it and see if it was fixable.

When my mom gave us the computer, she warned us that the brother was gay and into a few weird things and to let the kids around the computer because of not sure what we'd see. At first it was just gay porn and then when my husband came across massive amounts of child pornography that was just disturbing. He shut the computer off and wouldn't touch it.

The computer came from WY but they didn't want to mess with it. The cops here told us to just send it to them anyways. Instead, we called the FBI. We asked them to take the hard drive and see if there was anything there that they could find anyone else associated w/ the brother or if there were sites that they could get off the computer to have shut down.

They told us they were going to check it out and then wipe the hard drive. In the end, there was so much there that 1. they kept the hard drive for fear of ruining any evidence and gave us a new hard drive and 2. there were pictures that they thought were family and we had to pass more info on because they wanted to try to find them.

We don't know the outcome other then the FBI agent said that there aren't many child porn sites now, they are to easily tracked. He said that the predators find each other online and once they feel comfortable, they'll start swapping pics.

It's so very disturbing on so many levels. I only saw 1 picture on that computer and all I could think about was my niece.
So go on, go on be your own, go on be your own star!
          A superstar in my eyes!

I know what you mean lady. I was a Cyber Angel volunteer in the 90's and I had to ask to be reassigned. I couldn't take seeing the pics while trying to gather evidence against the preditors. It made me sick to my stomach and my daughter was under 10 at the time and it really mad me angry. Not just the usual anger, but wanting to get my hands on them and skin them and watch them suffer anger.

Welcome to my world DougBob and Lady -Freaking sickening bastards.

The problem with this law is that pornography is not illegal unless it hits three types of indecency, with pedophilia being the major. The problem with pornography is that there is no way to certify it.

Not advocating anything here- factually though, this is an anti-pornography law that will net everyone inside the fence- not just the pedophiles.

Example: Say someone accidentally types in the wrong URL and ends up at a site that has two GIFs embedded inside of other types of pornography. *ALARM* and that person is toast.

This thing needs work in my opinion- I dont want to be chasing anyone but these child predators.

I agree completely. Historically two issues pop up with this kind of legislation. One... the burden of time and equipment on ISP's and two... who decides whats bad. Already we've seen the DCMA abused by bogus takedowns over and over again for example.
