You're spot on. The problem the copy-right protections software is that it only hurts the people who purchase the game, not the pirates. When I first bought Far Cry 2 I had to either disable all of my anti-virus software that was blocking the copy-right protection installation, or just not install the game. Plus, for many games with this type of protection, the authentication servers will eventually be shut down, barring many people from ever playing that game again.
This is why people pirate many games. They can buy, hope that the game will actually authenticate (I have had that problem before), and be willing to accept that if they get a new computer or the authentication servers go offline, they are out of luck. Or they can pirate the game, without having to worry about these types of issues. I'm not saying copy-right protection is a bad thing, just that companies need to find better solutions.

That's because nothing much can be really done about it. It'd take up too much resources, money and manpower to enforce every single download initiated by someone who did this.

I do have to say, my grandpa, used to have a DUAL cassette tape deck, and he'd record his old LP records onto the Cassettes and then even dubb the cassettes to mostly give copies to family and neighbors.

This back when I was a little kid.

Ah, technology that I could manage. I suppose the difference is that copying has become big business and puts people out of work now. How can we deter the pirates? All I will say is Casino Royale, chair with bottom cut out and a big rope with an even bigger knot on the end

Downloading games I say NO to...

Anything else, fair game. I use downloads to experiment with a new type of music/band, and if I like it enough I'll go get the album. I'm not interested in spending 20 bucks on crap. I don't have enough money/want to go search half the movie stores in town for a 10 year old movie and end up not having enough money... unless it's an ungodly good movie

            and at phant...

Any music you want to hear first just look for it on youtube and if you like it just get the exact songs you want on iTunes.

So mugging is okay but murder isn't Silly example I know but where do you draw the line. I regularly hear of people who have viruses on their machines and guess what, they illegally download. Serves them right is my stance.

it is kind of a silly example... It's more like taking a 2 month old chocolate bar from a friends vs. walking into bestbuy and taking a $50 game.

People love convenience, and different people have different "levels" of comfortable convenience. Some people I know have absolutely no problem with downloading hundred dollar software and games every day. I do, but I don't have a problem with downloading a bunch of songs/ movies. IT all depends on how you feel.

                    just my

I knew we lived in a society based on convenience but I never heard theft described as convenient. I can see the charge sheet now, charged with being too convenient with other peoples property...lol

exactly... different levels. some people will think it's alright to steal a million dollars because it's convenient, even though it isn't. Some people won't take a penny... though that's rare. Everyone steals... Just to different extents. you see?

This is an interesting point that the RIAA and the MPAA ignore. Sometimes piracy actually helps bands or content owners. For example in Asia because MS is so pirated that when companies go legit they buy Microsoft products because it what they already know.

Another point I don't like is viewing each piracy as lost income. I don't hold that view at all. For example when I was younger I got a cracked copy of auto cad. Because I wanted to check it out. I had no intention of using it for business or earning a living from . If I did intend to do that I probably would have bought it soon afterward. However the BSA would consider that lost revenue and thats BS. As it goes I installed it played with it and then deleted it.

The only type of downloading I really consider bad would be downloading something to sell for your own profit. Personal use, perfectly fine.

ya, i still think that if you are the person that pirated the software (cracked it for public use) you should be fined, but someone who DL's the software for a couple hours and then deletes it is ok, unless they make a profit on it.

I think this is how they already do it right now. If you upload, you are tried, if you download, they take it easy on you.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
