Another point I don't like is viewing each piracy as lost income. I don't hold that view at all. For example when I was younger I got a cracked copy of auto cad. Because I wanted to check it out. I had no intention of using it for business or earning a living from . If I did intend to do that I probably would have bought it soon afterward. However the BSA would consider that lost revenue and thats BS. As it goes I installed it played with it and then deleted it.
If we were able to try and return software, again, this wouldn't be necessary.
I dont download illegit software, but then again, I dont buy software solutions that I cant try out. The fact that I wont buy it without trying it is a form of lost revenue as well.
These software companies should start reporting on that as well, in addition to the losses Mapes points out.

I'm a convert to Vista. My games run better on it, I dont see any Mem Hog issues that people talk about- Hell I ran Fallout 3 at highest settings all day on Saturday, and well on into the night (I had a surgery and couldnt sleep the pain was so bad so I played until 430am), no crashes, flickers or etc.
The only thing I can barely deal with are the UAC settings, which someone showed me how to de-activate and we are off to the races.
Now all our systems in the house, Wifey's laptop, kiddie's game rig, my rig are on Vista. I would have done this earlier had I had a chance to try it.
How did I get my demo copy? My father got irritated with Windows OS and went out and bought one of those top of the line Mac laptops. He said "here- take my laptop and my PC, we are done with Microsoft in my house."
The PC had Vista Ultimate on it. Fantastic stuff.
Demo's sell more software - I'm a software salesman by trade, and I'll tell you right now, no one spends $500k on software until there is a demo. Same thing in Business to Consumer.

The only thing I don't like about Vista (and it's the version on my laptop) is why o why when I right click on the damn network icon on the toolbar does it not offer me status or properties...gah it's like win98 and the "would you like to troubleshoot your printer" dialogue that does absolutely nothing for you. Other than that I have been ok with vista

I think games are like candy. You don't really need them but they sure are nice to have around. Would it be OK to take some candy without asking for it or paying for it if you only intended to eat it yourself? Would it matter if you intended to sell the candy to someone else? How about if you intended to share the candy with a friend?
If someone was handing out free samples of M&M's so you could decide if you liked them before you bought a whole bag would it make it OK to just take some Skittles off the rack because nobody was handing out free samples? If you really enjoyed your Skittles after you ate them would you go back to the store and say "I really liked the product I stole so I would like to legalize my actions by paying you for it"?
Is it just code? Yes. Is it still someone elses property? Yes. Do you have it without compensating them for the time and effort they put into producing it? Yes. C'mon.

It's not. Those genres have to deal with piracy also. I just don't seem to see the escalation of pricing and invasive 3rd party software with those other medias. If this was a movie or music based site then maybe the argument would rage over those issues and nobody would give a rip about gamers woes.

But if someone tells you the truth don't go on getting all mad at them - that's the question of the thread: Opinion
