    ID for alcohol gone mad?

Copied from OcUK. How stupid some store policies have become.

    Right,

Just been to Morrisons with my small 5 year old cousin. He loves me to bits and thought it would be fun to come with me whilst i did a spot of shopping and got some beer etc.

So after doing a large family shop, we got to the checkout and queued for about 5minutes. I got to the checkout and was greeted by a girl who was full of spots and looked about 15.

As the items were going through the checkout and my little cousin was packing everything away in bags the girl had the final thing to scan, the 3 crates of beer for the party this weekend.

She asked me for I.D which i was a bit miffed about as i look older than 21 (the new rule) however you have to check these days. Then she asked for I.D from my little cousin...

I said "what are you on about, why would a 5 year old need I.D when im buying alcohol and ive proved im old enough?".

after a huge debate with the manager and the girl saying its the new policy, i said "so if i was buying alcohol for a 5 year old, why would i bring him in the shop with me?"

They responded "sir, we cannot sell you this alcohol whilst you are with this child"

I said "so if i paid for my goods, put my cousin in the car and came back in, would you serve me?"

    they said "YES"....

    WTF?

I told them to shove their beer up their **** and they can put all the shopping back on the shelf and walked out. (?149.31 of shopping lol).

OHHHH to top it off, as i walked out, no word of a lie there was 4 chavs drinking strongbow from the bottle which was in a morrisons bag. They were about 13 - 15 max!

I dont agree with that rule and was disgusted at the way it was dealt with. The whole time they had smirks on their faces and treated me like i was a stupid child!

Well, since I work at a grocery store, I can say the author of this over-reacted. First off, those 2 people don't have to deal with those shopping supplies he bought, other people that weren't involved do (unless its way different than every store I know). So he pissed off the wrong person.

Second, cussing at an employee is just wrong in general. When you're at work, would you like it if someone told you those things? Especially in an awkward situation or when you've had to deal with morons all day? (when you work in a grocery store, you see the most idiots).

Third, sure the policy is dumb, and instead of asking for ID she should have said "I'm sorry sir, under new policy I cannot sell you alcohol while you have this child". I donno any 5 year olds that look older or as old as a 21 year old. But the putting it in the car thing is just probably for security. I'm sure that the management and all don't care what you do with your child, it's probably just a police thing, instead of a store thing. Or maybe the head management. I'm 99% sure the people this guy talked with didn't have the choice of making this new policy.

If I saw this guy and I was the cashier, I would have smacked that guy in the face, I don't care if I got fired, he's an idiot in my opinion. Especially cussing to a 15 year old girl trying to earn some money. Just pathetic.

That's ridiculous and I would have done a similar thing. I often have to shop with my son and I would hate to be ion that situation.

Actually deadly... the Customer is right in this case... And here's why...

1.) it's a 5 year old kid. You don't ask for I.D. for a 5 year old kid because they won't have an I.D. Store management messed up there as there is no such police ruling that requires a store clerk to ask for I.D. from anybody other then the person purchasing the alsohol.

2.) Leaving a kid in the car is a stupid and unsafe idea. This is wrong on so many levels that I don't even know where to begin. Weather it be the possibility of the kid getting kidnapped by some creep, or the car being 125 or so degrees which causes dehydration and overheating... which leads to death. Watch the news during the summer, at least once a week there is a kid who dies of heat exhaustion because he/she was left in the car while their parents when shopping for even a few minuets.

3.) Even if this was "store policy" most clerks ignore stupid rules and know better then to try to card a 5 year old kid when the parent is the one buying the alcohol. IDK about the U.K., but there is a general store policy for most grocery marts which states that if a clerk believes that the person purchasing the alcohol would be giving it to a minor they can refuse to sell said alcohol. But they must have an obvious reason, like a 21 year old person riding around with a bunch of 18/19/20 year old people in their car and they all seem a little drunk to being with.

Btw, these opinions are formed from front end experience at grocery stores, which lead to lead clerk position and almost front end assistant manger position.

To the author of this piece:

Find another store and shut the you know what up.

            Nobody cares.

Nice example you set for a 5 yr old, Mr. Tough guy.

And by the way, the minor was doing her job

Gene, policies and laws on this must be different based on the state because in NY there would be a very good possibility he wouldnt have been able to buy the beer. I used to work as a Customer Service Lead, which basically runs the front end, and I have had to turn down people in similar circumstances. The policy in my store was that unless the minor is a direct son or daughter, we can not sell the alcohol. I had to turn down a 40 year old woman once because she had her 9 year old daughter and her daughter's friend and because the friend wasnt a direct relation she couldnt buy the beer.

I agree with Deadly in this one, on that the guy was an idiot for reacting how he did. I have had people scream and swear at me a lot in that job and it doesnt help except to make the situation even more uncomfortable. Even with the car thing, if he were to leave, have the kid sit in the car and come back in we wouldnt be able to sell it because we would know the kid is with him. Plus leaving the kid in the car like that is dangerous so I wouldnt do that either.

The grocery thing was bad too since as Deadly said most of the time its not the cashier or manager who puts them back except the cold stuff. When I was CSL and someone would do that I would have to take the cold stuff back, and then I wouldnt be on the front end to help a cashier so the customer would have to wait for me to get back since a lot of the time I would be the only one running the front end.

It is a stupid policy but its one that has to be enforced or the cashier can lose their job. I have seen cops do stings using a similar tactic of sending in someone thats 21 with someone who isnt and try to buy beer that way, as well as internal stings.

"Even if this was "store policy" most clerks ignore stupid rules"

I'm one of the clerks that do *NOT* ignore stupid rules. If I'm not allowed to give a handcount because the person didn't try to put the bottles in the machine, I will *NOT* give a handcount. If I have the right to *NOT* accept bottles that have crap in them or I feel are too "nasty", than I will not accept them.

It's my right and my job to follow these rules, and although management doesn't give a crap, it's a rule thats set for me to obey so I obey them.

Also, it was *NOT* the stores idea to leave a kid in the car. I don't know what you're getting at, they never promoted the idea of leaving a kid in the car, they just answered his question. It was his idea, although I'm sure he wouldn't follow through with it if he didn't have his immature outburst.

If Cain decided he didn't care much for the cussing rule, would you guys start cussing? No, because you think its wrong. I find it wrong that I have to make my job 50x harder because I have to stop and count nasty bottles because someone was too lazy to put them in the machine, yet they recieve money for it and I get no bonuses for putting up with that crap.

Yes, I agree that she shouldn't have asked for ID from the kid. Infact I believe I did say that. But still, I'm with the store all the way. The guy was what we call an [CENSORED ] here in the grocery store business.

I don't know how many people here have worked at grocery stores, but it's a unique job. It isn't anything like commision, it's dealing with everyone at any thing. I deal with morons I can't believe could even put their own pants on, every damn day. I deal with people that get angry because I work at Fred Meyers so we cannot accept Safeway or Albertsons cans so they can't get 5 cents.

I get people that are so stupid they hit the customer service button when I'm right there fixing their machine. I get people that scream for me to help them FIRST, even though I'm already half way to fixing a different machine, and if I say "I'll be there in a sec" they get [CENSORED].

I get people that expect me to know every damn thing in the store and where it is. I get people that expect me to be able to give them free objects because I work there. My discount SUCKS! 10% isn't much from groceries, especially since they don't take off 10% from the total, only each object.

People are morons out there and don't know what grocery store people have to deal with. There are certain rules we have to follow because we are open to the general public and the general public needs us, so we get everyone.

This guy should be banned from the grocery store in my opinion.

and like I said, innocent people had to suffer because he had a pissy fit. The people not even involved had to deal with the cleanup.

I agree the girl should not have been condescending and ask for the ID from a 5 year old. Although I don't really agree with the rule completely, but don't completely disagree either, when I'm selling to a customer and let them down, I never smirk and act very very concerned and saddened for their loss. In this case the beer was lost.

Just today at work i had a man come back 5 minutes after leaving. i had to take 30 minutes to get the highest manager just so he could tell him how disappointed he was and gave the old, "your store used to be..." speech. After saying that I guess I disagree with the situation handling on both sides, but I don't want to see a bad person walk off drunk with his little kid. Too bad everyone has to deal with the consequences of a small percentage of peoples actions!

Thought i'd better put my two cents in here and ty to clear things up. The reason why the 'guy' acted so strongly is because the checkout girl and manager viewed this new policy too literally. This policy has been put into place for when somebody is obviously buying alcohol for his underage buddy that is with him.

It's just another way of trying to crack down on underage drinking. It's left to the checkout worker to make the judgement call, and in this case she, and then the manager, made the wrong one. I mean, who buys alcohol for a 5 year old?

OHHHH to top it off, as i walked out, no word of a lie there was 4 chavs drinking strongbow from the bottle which was in a morrisons bag. They were about 13 - 15 max!
These are the people they're meant to be stopping, and as per usual these 'chavs' got their nightly fuel. The person that should have been served had to leave empty handed.
