Thought i'd better put my two cents in here and ty to clear things up. The reason why the 'guy' acted so strongly is because the checkout girl and manager viewed this new policy too literally. This policy has been put into place for when somebody is obviously buying alcohol for his underage buddy that is with him.
It's just another way of trying to crack down on underage drinking. It's left to the checkout worker to make the judgement call, and in this case she, and then the manager, made the wrong one. I mean, who buys alcohol for a 5 year old?
These are the people they're meant to be stopping, and as per usual these 'chavs' got their nightly fuel. The person that should have been served had to leave empty handed.
See that is a problem as well. In the store I worked at it was not a judgment call. The policy was sent down from the main office and was to be followed. This was in response to stupid cashiers who would sell to minors and then get the store in trouble. It could have been similar there as in there is no lee way. Its either you follow the policy to the T or you risk getting in huge trouble.
well just because they have a Morrisons bag doesn't mean they bought it at Morrisons. I see a lot of people carrying around Fred Meyer bags filled with safeway cans, and I know for FACT we don't sell safeway cans.
"Even if this was "store policy" most clerks ignore stupid rules"
I'm one of the clerks that do *NOT* ignore stupid rules. If I'm not allowed to give a handcount because the person didn't try to put the bottles in the machine, I will *NOT* give a handcount. If I have the right to *NOT* accept bottles that have crap in them or I feel are too "nasty", than I will not accept them.
It's my right and my job to follow these rules, and although management doesn't give a crap, it's a rule thats set for me to obey so I obey them.
Also, it was *NOT* the stores idea to leave a kid in the car. I don't know what you're getting at, they never promoted the idea of leaving a kid in the car, they just answered his question. It was his idea, although I'm sure he wouldn't follow through with it if he didn't have his immature outburst.
If Cain decided he didn't care much for the cussing rule, would you guys start cussing? No, because you think its wrong. I find it wrong that I have to make my job 50x harder because I have to stop and count nasty bottles because someone was too lazy to put them in the machine, yet they recieve money for it and I get no bonuses for putting up with that crap.
Yes, I agree that she shouldn't have asked for ID from the kid. Infact I believe I did say that. But still, I'm with the store all the way. The guy was what we call an [CENSORED] here in the grocery store business.
I don't know how many people here have worked at grocery stores, but it's a unique job. It isn't anything like commision, it's dealing with everyone at any thing. I deal with morons I can't believe could even put their own pants on, every damn day. I deal with people that get angry because I work at Fred Meyers so we cannot accept Safeway or Albertsons cans so they can't get 5 cents.
I get people that are so stupid they hit the customer service button when I'm right there fixing their machine. I get people that scream for me to help them FIRST, even though I'm already half way to fixing a different machine, and if I say "I'll be there in a sec" they get [CENSORED].
I get people that expect me to know every damn thing in the store and where it is. I get people that expect me to be able to give them free objects because I work there. My discount SUCKS! 10% isn't much from groceries, especially since they don't take off 10% from the total, only each object.
People are morons out there and don't know what grocery store people have to deal with. There are certain rules we have to follow because we are open to the general public and the general public needs us, so we get everyone.
This guy should be banned from the grocery store in my opinion.
and like I said, innocent people had to suffer because he had a pissy fit. The people not even involved had to deal with the cleanup.
For a person that follows the rules, you sure missed the first point by a long shot. I have significant experience with Retail Grocery, being that my father was a senior executive in IT for one of the Grocery stores you referenced here.
All employees are expected to know where everything is in the store at all times. I know quite a few executives and I know for a fact in every Retail location in every Supermarket Chain, from WINCO, to Super Value, to Alberstons, to Safeway, to Kroger- it is the expectation.
Second thing, it's not that they are morons, it's that they don't realize that you have multiple things going on. They dont have to either- they came to the store to get served- so it is all about them. It's not about you- it's all about the customer. Effective communication of this fact, letting them know that you have to serve everyone equally and that you are sensitive to their needs, will help you realize that there are fewer morons in the store and help you not look like the jerk you tend to be when you think you are hiding your irritation but they can see it written all over your face and in your body language.
Last point, I'm on your side 100% of the time. Why would you jeapordize yourself with your union, your company, and your job? If you get fired for ignorance in a grocery store, you are blacklisted from nearly all chains. Why should you care about the guy who throws a fit? As the customer, this guy is FIRED. "Sorry I cant help you but if you'd like to call me names, I'd be more than happy to call my manager, or the police, to help you sort yourself out"

Well Hammy, you are right, it's all about the customer. But deep down inside, the ones that get paid hourly instead of how often we help someone, don't care. The people that set the paychecks or whatever or how we get paid are to blame on how people act. I hate customers, I'll admit it. They make my job hard, especially when one makes me feel like I did something wrong because I can't help them, even when I found someone that can help them. As for expectations, well as far as I'm concerned the employers of those stores need to do a better job at training their workers. I know tons of people and have seen tons of people be in the same situation as me, not knowing where everything is.
I was thrown into the aisles and told to face them, that was my way of learning where things are. Problem is, facing is so goddamn boring that our minds move away from the objects we are facing and to other things. Hell I've thought of a lot of good movie ideas during facing (or bored sitting on the crapper but let's not go there ).
And to be honest, a lot of people are indeed morons. They go there after getting yelled at by customers and then fight us with their own medicine. I hate when people get in a bad mood and then make other people feel down, but then again we all do that, even me. But a working environment is not the place to do that especially. I can't walk away from a customer if they are pissing me off, so no matter what I have to deal with their wrath. And not to mention there are a lot of boneheads down at the bottles that yell at me when I take the reciept from a hand count that came out of their machine. Do they REALLY think I'm stealing their receipt when I'm wearing a company shirt and hit different buttons then them?
Yep, I'm going to steal their receipt and give it to another person right in front of them, especially when I explained that it wasn't theirs.
I know you're on my side and I'm glad about that, but I have to disagree, they are morons in my opinion, I can give hundreds of examples. This guy is a moron because like you said, he needs to shut the hell up and go somewhere else. It isn't all about them if their business is hurting our other business, and when people walk in to a scene like this (where a guy is yelling and cussing), they want to avoid it. I don't care how much they are buying, or how often they come to my store, if they are offending me or my co-workers I won't care about them and I'll make sure they never come again.
That being if I was in charge of the store and wouldn't get fired.
The same thing happened to me a few years back. My brother took me to the store with him to pick some stuff up for my mom's surprise birthday party. One of the things on the list was a single bottle of red wine. He was 24 at the time and i was 17. We go to check out and they card him, then go to card me. He asked to see the manager right away. Long story short, we got the bottle of wine for free.
The only thing they do not take 10% off of is sales tax. And it is illegal to discount sales tax.

Where I learned math 10% off of every item adds up to 10% off the total.
5.00 - 10% = 4.50
4.00 - 10% = 3.60
total 9.00 total with discount 8.10
10% of 9.00 = 8.10
You'd think that, but for some reason it never does. Next time I buy groceries I'll tell you guys my receipt. But for some odd reason it just turns out to be different.
Probably because like what apache said, there are some fees on certain objects that they'll just forget about if you're buying a lot instead of just that one object, like bottle deposits when you buy a case of root beer or something.
You don't ask a 5 year old for ID.
Sure, do your job... but don't be an absolute idiot about it.
The fact that some chavs were drinking outside with alcohol bought from the store makes it pretty clear that the manager and girl were just being ass****'s

Exactly. TYou can bet that if they had gone to a different checkout none of this would have happened.
I know for a fact this isn't isn't enforced policy to stop and ask for ID from all minors. I shop there a few times a month and i've seen plenty of familys doing their shopping with their kids in tow. Never once have i seen this happen.
PS. He didn't come online to boast. Just to let his frustrations out. I would also bet ?1m that the 'chavs' did get their alcohol from Morrisons
