    Houston police officer shot

    http://www.click2houston.com/news/18222421/detail.html

And if the cops would initiate traffic stops with their guns drawn for protection there would be a public uproar about "excessive force", profiling, etc. How many officers have been killed this way this year?

Its very sad. However I don't see how clearing leather would have saved him....

But it would certainly have improved his odds.

That is very sad to hear. I really hate people that would do such a thing. My dad is a NY State Trooper and has been for over 20 years. Now he is a Station Commander so he has a desk job but before that and when he is out and about its always made me nervous for him. The real nervous time was when Bucky Philips was on the lose and shooting up Trooper cars. He almost got called in to work from my grandparents house when Bucky was cornered on the state line. He was either going to be going down to try and catch him or go back to his station and take over for someone who was on duty that would be sent down there. Being that my dad is a cop these stories hit home pretty hard.

Why I say that is because the perp ran. He would have to had shot the bastich in the back. From the article the perp hid behind a dumpster and than shot the LEO as he came around the corner. Having his gun out prolly wouldn't have helped him in this situation sadly.

This is a very tragic issue. All I can say is training, training, training. Also, the Marines and Army do it. Sounds like at least 2 hours a day training on COD4 or COD5 is something all police forces should look at for training to improve reflexes.

Playing a video game is considerably different than firing a real firearm...not even close. Add to that a real life firefight and I don't think playing COD is worth squat for training purposes.

<insert repetitive comment about firearms in the hands of civilians / criminals>

Tragic loss, and so close to the holidays.
[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

I have been trained on this situation guys.

There isnt much you can do. You have to decide to chase or not. And if you chase, you run this risk.

Just like the most likely place an officer will be shot and killed will be in his/her patrol car.
