Is it coplete control over the PC or just the internet that you want?

From all account this is quite good.

As a person who knows best what she wants to achieve I should write what I want to do with that PC (yes, that's me, marvindecrain's wife ).

The thing is: kids are young, they don't do much on our computers, so I want to block almost everything to stop their curiousity.
        I'd like to:
        * block right click on everything
        * block access to start menu
        * block rights to install/remove soft
Simply I want them to just click icons on desktop to play their games and visit only those sites on the net I will allow to. So there has to be "only white list" option.
And the biggest trouble is - the software allowing me to do what I want should not affect admin account and be FREE.
Oh I would forgot about limiting time spent on using the computer (not internet, computer as a whole).
        Do I want too much?

I will have to get back to you on that. I need to do a bit of research first.

The way my parents have it setup is they used mc'affe, used to use norton, to block all the internet access but to spacific sites. They are easy to use programs, but as far as blocking stuff like programs i dont know if xp has th UAC controls like vista does.

I just found out that when I set up a limited account for children they will not be able to install soft - that's one step further
I don't want to use norton 'cause it's really a killer for slower comps and I think the best antivirus is nod32 - that is currently installed there, I will play with it a little.
I found one free soft for blocking the net and using "only the white list" option, but it also affects admin account But it can be temporarily disabled, so it's better than nothing.
I'm slowly getting there, but the deadline of xmas eve is frightening me

And we still don't have a case for it... great...

Actually, according to the most recent Maximum PC Symantec's Norton AV has been completely rewritten for the 2009 release. Almost the smallest footprint, other than some free junk AV's, as well as having one of the best search/destroy abilities.

And of course I can't find the article.

Well, that would be a great news, marvin's a big fan of norton But we had to stop using it about 1-2 years ago. It was killing our machines. maybe we will test it to see how it's working now

And the time goes... I hate building a pc with no money and in a short time. Always something goes wrong. And this time I want this to be perfect - it is the first computer for my children

Lil update on offtopic: we finally did buy the case... I hope it'll come on time
