I'm confused. Which is not unusual, but whats the purpose of this OS. Is this the next thing past Vista or did they just throw this out and you can use it if you want to. Doesnt seem like there would be any apps out there yet for this OS.

Plus, this is the first I've heard about it. Why hasnt there been a bunch of hooplah about it like there was with XP and Vista.

7 is going to be the next step up hopefully. I'm feeling it's going to be the improvement on Vista with the under the hood fixes they didn't have the chance or knowledge of in time for Vista.
A critical player here is going to be drivers and if they got the beta out to the third party players in time for them to start developing and testing their drivers

From what I understand it's based off of Windows Vista, so drivers shouldn't be an issue, other than some updates to make it compatible with what changes they've made in 7. From what I've been reading it's almost like when they took 2000, made it prettier and added some functionality to get XP. Also recent things I've been reading say that it may be faster than Vista or XP for a lot of different tasks. Betting that's not gaming though

Actually, check this article out...no specific numbers, but it is a comparison. Nothing on games and running programs like CAD, Photoshop, etc though, which I think is more what a lot of people who care are looking at. http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3236

It kind of seems like Vista was just a big beta for Windows 7.

Marvin, you hadn't mentioned it, but did the OS successfully detect all of your hardware ? Thats the most important thing for any user looking at migrating to Win 7 at this point.

Open up Device Mangler, err Manager, and see if you don't have any yellow 'bangs' on the hardware list showing up.

U make a good point there Duke....Vista is the Beta and 7 is the final release...if this is the case, MS are brilliant to do it this way in regards to a sales tactic...why spend $$ on Service Packs, updates, etc when u can do it this way and sell 7 for $400 a pop to everyone who has already paid for Vista...

All these so-called updates they packed into Win 7 and we still have no WinFS !!!! Remember that ?? If you didn't, it was the replacement for the NTFS file system, and it was originally promised in Vista .. but like many things, got yanked out.

See it in Win 7 ?? Nope ... still not there. MS wants to get this OS out the door in a hurry, so they've done nothing more than clean up what annoyed people about Vista. If you think that is a worthwhile expenditure of your cash, then by all means check it out.
I'm getting my free copies by attending a Win7 rollout event and I'll probably use it on a PC at some point, but Vista runs like a scalded cat on all of my rigs as is.

I may look into it. I am hoping to build a new computer and have more ram then XP can handle so this may be a good upgrade from XP. Especially if when its out it is on MSDN and I can get it cheap through school.

I have 2 devices not found ...but in XP and Vista was the same problem, and driver wasn`t installed
Rest of hardware inside and this connected are detected by OS and driver are installed from OS only for graphic card GF 8800GT driver was downloaded from Nvidia web site some prerelase WDDM 1.1 driver ....
So now eveything (hardware) is working fine

I think that explains some things also.

LOL. I thought it was funny but I haven't had that many problems with Vista once I turned off UAC.
