OKay got the Hard Drive working...but....

....see what happened was this...to keep you updated....

I replaced my old IDE 80 gig WD Drive with a WD SATA 500 Gig drive...

I was able to get my 80 gig to finally be detected by the BIOS (Just had to jumper it correctly)

Now when I try to access it in WINDOWS.....it says that the disk hasn't been formated....do I want to format now...yes or no?

I didn't think it was suppose to do that, I thought it was suppose to let you just view the drive (it was the drive that had the operating system on it)

So I cannot view the content on the drive to bring back some data.

Were you having any problems with the drive before this? What did you set the jumper as? Is the drive showing up in disk management? Is there a drive letter assigned to it? Was it FAT32? or NTFS? Did your old drive have the OS on it? I have a feeling it's either that your old drive is FAT32 and your new drive that you've made NTFS doesn't want anything to do with it, or the other way around. Or that your PC is detecting that you have 2 installs of the same OS, chooses the priority one (Sata) and completely ignores the other. Do you have a USB HDD enclosure or anything?

*Could* be because it already had Windows installed, I've seen a few cases where weird things happened there. It shouldn't be affected that way though. Worst case, load up either a Ultimate Boot Disk for Windows based off Bart PE or a Linux LiveCD, may favorite being Ubuntu and see if you can do the transfer, then reformat it.

Also, if you haven't done it yet, restart the computer, amazing how many times that solves issues.

Other than those suggestions, I guess worst case is that the drive was somehow corrupted while you were in playing with things.

Start -> Run: type:

'compmgmt.msc'

Enter the above line without the quotes of course.

That will show you the connected media, and it will show you whether the drive has been formatted. As was mentioned, Ultimate Boot CD wiuld also be a wise choice before doing anything else.
No reason that you would have lost anything on it, but you DO need the proper software tools to fix these issues that can crop up.

Make sure you have the 80 gig set for a slave....check the jumper and make sure its in the right spot.Then you should be able to see what ever you want on that drive.

Have u activated your new drive in Windows yet?? I had the same problem but realised under the "Disk Management" tab in the CP u need to activate and format the drive for Windows to pick it up

It should NOT be set to slave unless there is a Master device on the cable. In this case it sounds like he has the one IDE drive and a SATA drive, which means the IDE hd should be the master device. Boot order for hard drives is then set in the BIOS.

And Zantheus has a point, you may need to 'activate' the drive before you can use it, even without formatting. Windows is retarded and picky at times, which everyone should know by now Check out the drive properties under Right click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management.

try plugging it into an external housing on another computer and viewing it as a "removable device", this is how i fixed a somewhat similar problem with an old drive that windows wouldn't recognize, we plugged it into my dad's mac and it showed up which let me drop all of the important files into our "shared docs" folder, if you don't have another comp that you can do this with, ask a friend with a laptop if you can use it for a couple hours.

well are u on an admin account, if so, make SURE that the HDD is hooked up right, and if it is... check the windows tech support forums and the WD forums too

Primary Master/Slave - NOTHING is on this cable, it's empty

Secondary Master - DVD/RW; Secondary Slave - The 80 Gig HDD W.D. in question that's causing the problem

SATA - the 500 GB that's on it's own cable...different animal altogether.

Funny, I was able to access disk manager using the cmd prompt but not through control panel...(where it gave me that error)....guess what it shows the "Drive in Question as "Active" it's NTFS

I just can't "Explore it" without it saying that it needs formating.

Yes , it's set to slave.

I think your best bet is to now try a boot disc.
