    Memory help

    I have this computer:

HP Pavilion a6040n PC specifications - HP Home Home Office Products

I bought new memory for it today, and the darn thing will run for a bit, then just BSOD.

What was in it was DDR2 555 pc5300 (stock)
What I put in it was DDR2 800 pc 6400

It will run 2GB fine, but when I up it to 4GB it just tanks.

windows has a memory tester, but it is kinda funky with the install, it told me to DL it last time codwaw bsod'd me, it is called "mtinst.exe" try looking it up and see if that helps. it will ID which chip is bad, and exactly where on the chip the error is. with that info the place you bought it from should give you another one for free.

Is it 4GB of all new RAM, or 2GB of each? Might want to start pulling sticks from DIMMS to see if maybe you have a bad DIMM. You could also run Memtest86 to see if one of the RAM sticks is bad, or has some bad portions on it. If Windows is storing to that part as you work, it could be hitting it and then BSOD'ing only after it hits a bad part.

So you bought 2 2GB sticks? Did you have both slots populated before? Have you tried booting with 1 stick in each of the slots?

Throw out the computer... HP pavilions are horrible... That'll fix it.

Dosn't Vista have a memtest in the boot options???

My wife just greenlighted a new system.

Problem solved- I'll slam the old mem in and just deal with it until I find the right motherboard....

any suggestions less than $200 are greatly appreciated.

What are you looking for in this motherboard? What does it need to support in current and future upgrades?

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
