I guess it's only really speculation until Windows 7 goes gold, but who wants to take bets on if they do it or not? Didn't they learn with all the trouble people had with Windows Vista? I swear, for every 3 strides forward MS takes another 2 or 3 backwards.

This doesn't give me too much heartburn because home premium is all I ever needed. I'm curious though, what problems were caused by the different versions? Is it along the lines of bugs with the OS or marketing issues?

I don't really see much of a problem with that either, although they should probably just make 4 versions:
1. Basic (or Starter) - Slimmed down version (read: cheap)
2. Home - Everything a normal home user would need
3. Business - Everything you would need for a business/work machine
4. Ultimate (with everything from Business and Home)

I don't see what the problem is either. It's a solid deployment plan. To be honest as soon as I saw Ultimate on the beta I never expected anything other than the vista flavors. It gives the customer flexibility on what they want and give MS flexibility on targeting customers. Although the pricing will still suck. I have already made my mind up to take the plung on Ultimate though.

But Microsoft will only sell Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional at retail, in a bid to eliminate some of the confusion caused by a plethora of Windows Vista versions.

That should make it somewhat easier for everybody.
