Here's a trick I learned working with Hartford Computer Group, Inc.

Unplug the Cmos battery, unplug the power. Wait 30 seconds and then press the power button and hold it down for 30 seconds. Replace battery and power source, and try post.

I didn't think it would work either, but I have had several success stories using this little bit of advice. Lots of semi-new machines have this issue and I would have otherwise had to run a warranty RMA.

See if that works. It is definitely worth a try.

If that doesn't work, remove the power, remove the battery, immediately press the power button and hold for 30 seconds and then replace battery and power and try to post. Sometimes one or the other works.

As a last ditch effort, unplug power (leave battery in) and press the power button once, then with the power still unplugged, hold the power button down for 30 seconds.

    Good Luck,

    Yours Truly.

Thanks for the suggestion, herk, but it remains dead. All the fans spin up, the video card's LEDs light up, everything SOUNDS fine, but I never get that satisfying POST beep.
I'm leaving the CMOS battery out overnight (I've read that in some very rare setups this does make a difference) but I know dead when I see it, and this one is definitely pushing up daisies so far.

Do you have a PCI Port 80 card to see if you are getting any POST codes? That might give you some more information.

        For example, something like this:
        SY-TECHAID Tech Aid Debug Card

They really come in handy if the motherboard doesn't have a POST display.

          Dead, thanks for the suggestion
Honestly, I can't remember having a dead board before this one that I couldn't diagnose and fix easily enough. This is the first one that has been problematic to the point that I can't lay the blame on just one part.

Looks like I need to add a port 80 card to my repair arsenal now.
