While this is from a user testing Windows 7, I trust the /. community for the most part. I'd like to see some other corroberation before I judge but the accusations wouldn't surprise me in the least. If any of this is true, M$ can kiss any upgrade money from me good bye. XP still works, and well imo, other than DX10, and there hasn't been enough done with that to convince me to upgrade as it is.

I don't trust anyone until I see it for myself. He hasn't give enough specifics for me yet. I'll try and get time to see what he is talking about with the degradation of audio. It could very well be drivers not matured enough for Win7.
As far as the firewall issues I would require more information. The windows firewall has always functioned with the ability to add a program to the exceptions list with the interaction of the user. I would be curious what exactly he is referring to here.
Concerning the Local Settings directory, Vistas' current increased security already has the Local Settings shortcut (not directory) locked down. The settings is in fact as follows (plus the Application Data shortcut information):

2. The %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings shortcut has the everyone group applied with the explicit deny option on List Folder/read data
3. The %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local directory does NOT have the everyone group applied with explicit deny option on List Folder/read data.
Concerning the Application Data directory
1. The %USERPROFILE%\Application Data is in fact a shortcut to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming
2. The %USERPROFILE%\Application Data shortcut has the everyone group applied with the explicit deny option on List Folder/read data

Concerning Firewall functionality.

Based on just the misrepresentation and the lack of mentioning the Vista functionality in regards to the usage of the Local Settings and Application Data shortcuts shows me a lack of knowledge and weakens his information. Therefore he loses all creditability in my eyes and I give very little credence to the rest of his statements and pretty much want to write it off as another rant of ignorance against MS.
It's the same thing in my eyes as one of the engineers at work blurting out in meeting there is a problem with a lockdowns because a directory copied from a CD-ROM to a shared repository has the read-only bit tagged on it when in fact that is the normal operation of the copy function in windows XP. When he makes an ignorant statement like that he loses all credibility and all his work is in question.

A lot of this is above my head but I thought the ability to capture audio from your sound card was gone with Vista? I had a nice program that worked on XP but I was never able to get to work with Vista. Maybe I will just need to keep an XP build somewhere in the house for this purpose.

Well you gotta add this is the beta stage some fixes will be made, how many... you never know microsoft is horrible at fixing bugs in the last few years.

the past few years? Microsoft has been horrible about updates for quite awhile now. Even back in the 2000 and ME days (broadband available then, so keep that in mind) they didn't release updates for known problems for quite awhile.
