    A "Savage" storage solution ;)

    Hey all,

I finally got my Vantec enclosure back from NCIX (the first one had to be RMA'd back) and am currently formatting my new 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD (7200 RPM) Very excited!

and yes... that is a TI-83+ in the background

    wow

I'll probably need a biggie like that soon to store stuff with. Nice!

Thanks, It's pretty cool... the enclosure can fit both 2.5" and 3.5" sata hdd's and it's got USB 2.0 and e-Sata ports so it's pretty handy!

Since the drive is new I'm formatting it now... It's been going steady for about 53 minutes and I've completed 33% of the format! ..... looks like it's going to be running for a while.

        cool

You just pop 'em in then?

I bought a Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive at Circuit City for cheap when they were going out of business, mostly for photos and such. I don't need it yet, but I'll get there someday.

Yaa.. you can just pop it out (after powering off the drive obviously ) plug in the new one, turn it back on and you're good to go.

Plus, because the drive is about 3/4 open to the air it doesn't heat up as badly as some enclosures (like my old FreeAgent Pro).

It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and for current OS's (Windows > 2000, Mac OSX, and Linux Kernel 2.5 or newer I think) there are no drivers required So it's literally plug and play.

I was wondering about these things. So would you recommend it Savage?

Well... Since I've only been using mine for a few hours I can't really say I've had much experience with it yet... but so far it's performed quite well... It's almost done formatting my HDD and seems to read by my 3.5" and 2.5" Sata drives without any problems. I only have a USB 2.0 port but when I build my desktop (when ) I'd love to try it out.

Based on my initial impression it seems like a pretty solid product.

Hoooray! The Format is complete! it took 2 Hours and 18 Minutes to format 1TB (well actually the partition is 931.58 GB). The drive is pretty hot, so I figure I'll let it cool down before I start throwing tons of data on it.

LOL don't worry, drives inside computer become much more hotter than your open-air drive :P

Anyone know how they do with dust, pet fur, etc. in an open air enclosure like that? I know in most cases (unless you have all kinds of filters and whatnot) they're *fairly* open to the air and dust, etc, but it's still not the exact same thing.

Any models of these come with Ethernet? I'd love to see a couple of 1tb drives plugged into a switch.

Doesn't look like the drive docks have an Ethernet connection... You could always get some sort of NAS device or build your own

Unless you spend some serious money on a prebuilt NAS the transfer speeds are incredibly slow.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
