    In need of a printer.

My HP 952c has driven me crazy for the last time. It's down to spiting out a bunch of symbols instead of what it was supposed to. It used to do this on occasion but this time I can't get it to work. It's gotta be 10 years old so I figure it time for a new one.

This one looks OK and has built in wireless but I have a few questions.

Customer Reviews Of HP Deskjet 6988 CB055A Up to 36 ppm 4800 x 1200 dpi Wireless InkJet Color Printer - Retail

    1. I have a print server. Is there any difference in using the built in wireless instead. I may find a cheaper model that doesn't have a wireless connection.

    2. On some models that is a Rj45 connection. Is this used to connet the printer directly to the network?

    3. Bloatware. I read int he reviews that HP has a bunch of apps you need to install with the driver. Is there a way around all this?

    4. Dow any of you guys have a good printer that you would recommend?

    1. Not really no.

    2. Yes.

    3. Not sure, haven't used HP in a while.

    4. I swear by canon printers. However i don't actively keep up with the latest tech.

I also use Canon printers. One thing you should look at is print cartridges. HP's usually have one black and one multi color. If you run out of one color you have to replace the cartridge, even if the other colors are not empty.
That is another reason I like canon printers. They have multiple color cartridges. my main printer is a Canon Pro 9500 and it uses 10 cartridges. I needed one for my business that does excellent color photo printing.

I agree with everyone here, with the exception that the wireless printers are seamless and very good from HP.

Something about not jiving around with configs and the new wifi technology from HP included in the printers makes me very happy with the product.

Canon does a great job in terms of ink conservation, however, I have had arm wrestling matches with some of their software and the two family PC's outside of our home that I support.

You cant go wrong right now in terms of purchasing technology- not only is it latest and greatest, but the depressed economy is making expensive items like Printers and Monitors relatively pain free in terms of cost to acquire.

My big question is do you really have to print color? If no screw inkjets buy a B/W laser. I bought a 100 dollar Brother laser printer 8 years ago and it's still going ok

I've had a Canon for a number of years and am quite happy with it...getting older, but still does an excellent job printing framable photos.

I bought a Laserjet off Craigs List 2 years ago and I also have a Photosmart All-in-one for photo-print, copying, and faxing.

The laserjet is the default network printer.
For the Color Photosmart, the only reason I had to replace my inkjet cartridges recently was because they were so old, they had gobbed up goo at the connect points- 2 years ago was the last time I bought Ink! AND it was expensive too!

You will buy your laserjet printer in a year with the ink uised in the color printer if you print a lot. Just my two cents on the investment "why's"

                  Might as well have both

This is an excellent question. Most color printing is done by my kids for silly projects. I ran across a nice laser jet on new egg today and I though about the need to print in color. I will run it by my wife and see what she says.

I had a laser for 10 years until it died. I do need color for my business.

Having two printers, a B/W laser and a color inkjet, is a good idea! The vast majority of the stuff I print at home doesn't need color, so using a laser for that would work just as well. About the only thing I need color for is when I print pictures. The savings in ink cartridges would probably pay for the laser printer...

Well my needs (since I don't have kids artwork to consider) are pretty basic. Google maps, resumes...etc.. thats all in B/W. If I really want something printed in color it's usually a digital pic. I'll use shutterfly.com, fototasten.com,digibug.com, or snapgalaxy.com which allow you to send a digital pic and they mail you a print on photopaper...

I found out last night that my stepdaughter needs color for he schoolwork. I may get a cheapo color printer and a laser for the B&W. I will need to look into the costs of laser cartridges vs ink jet cartridges.
