New 2.5" HDD

So I've been thinking about getting a larger hard drive for my laptop. Right now it's got a 100GB Seagate 7200 RPM drive, and I'm dual booting Windows and Linux, recently I've found that I'm at about 75% space utilization on both systems... I've been looking at these two drives:

Both drives are very similar.. but one has the GForce drop protection... is it worth it?

Any reason why you're wanting to stay with Seagate? They don't have a good track record at the moment. However this is with there 3.5" drives.

Any reason why you're wanting to stay with Seagate? They don't have a good track record at the moment. However this is with there 3.5" drives.

I haven't had any problems with my current Seagate drive, and I'd heard that they are better for power consumption than most WD drives.... But I don't know this for sure....

Well I ended up buying the 320 GB Seagate drive (with the g-shock), but not from NCIX. My boss had actually bought the exact same drive about a month ago and hadn't used it. So I bought it from him for $70.00. I imaged the drive last night and moved the image onto the new drive today.

I ran into a few problems when I tried to get my linux swap partition working.... but luckily I had the image to delete and try again

I used a combination of Clonezilla and PartedMagic. They're both free tools (GNU) and seem to work well with NTFS and EXT3 partitions.

Things got a little complicated when I tried to move my linux partitions (swap,/boot,/) because I couldn't seem to move them. So I imaged the entire drive with Clonezilla (MBR and all) and then transferred the image to the new drive. It booted up fine and I just needed to move everything around to take advantage of the new space.

I moved tried to move the linux partitions to the end of the drive so I could expand both windows and linux, but I couldn't seem to move it. So I took an image specifically of the /boot and / partitions and then deleted them. I recreated the partitions at the end of the disk and transferred the images back. It seemed to work except that I labeled the SWAP drive differently. So I figured just delete it and re-create it with the new label.......


However when I deleted it all the partitions after it had their partition numbers decrement by 1 (so from sda6 to sda5) which meant that my MBR no longer pointed to /boot and my grub config was no longer valid..... I ended up just deleting all the linux partitions for a second time re-creating them (with the correct partition numbers) and transferring the images back again. I also had to use the "check" feature (not sure of the actual name) on PartedMagic to expand the ext3 file system onto the entire partition (went from 15GB to 97 GB). After that (and a small modification to my fstab) it all seemed to work fine... Both Windows and Fedora boot with no problems and I have lots of extra space on my drives now!
