It's old news that Seagates 3.5" drives are knackered because of bad firmware. Send them back and ask them to retrieve the data if it's important. Then buy a WD drive. They're on offer here.

        WD 1tb Black SATA drive

My Seagate 1.5 is running fine. I have over 500gb of DVDs on it and its been running flawlessly. It was one of the newer, non-affected model firmware drives.

Eh, not necessarily firmware, you might have just gotten a bad disk. Really oughta run some kind of program that will notify you of SMART events if your board doesn't do so. I've had issues with all the major brands of hard drives, and I've drives that have performed beautifully from them all. I think in most cases it's just bad luck, any manufacturer that constantly had problems probably wouldn't exist any more.

Well I haven't tried them yet, but my sis(HSDragon) says all she uses is Samsung and hasn't had a problem. Even though I haven't tried them yet when I order my new drives for a RAID 0 configuration in my desktop they will be Samsung since I trust her word.

Out of all the drives I have used over the years, to included the 5 1/4 inch drives, I have used Nothing but Western Digital, Maxtor and Hitachi. Out of about 20+ drives I have only had 2 drives give problems and those we not catastrophic issues. One of my external USB drives, the 320GB Maxtor gave problems and removing it and using it direct connect worked fine, it was the power supply in the external case that went out.
The other drive was a Western Digital years ago, I believe it was one of the 500MB drives and I used the WD recovery software on it and remapped the bad sectors.

I don't know why I have stayed away from Seagate, but to include my professional experience, the Seagate is probably the one type that I had work experience with and of course we had our own opinions and that's probably why we all didn't use them in our home projects.

Eh, I have Maxtor I've been running for close to 9 years now. A WD that's been going for about 7, a Seagate that's been going about 5, another Seagate that's been going about 3 years, and 4 WD that have been going a little over a year.

I keep hearing how horrible Maxtor was, how bad Seagate is, but personal experience says they're fine. The 5 year Seagate replaced a WD that burnt out in about 4 months, the 3 year Seagate was new, the 9 year Maxtor was new, the 7 year WD was new, and of the 4 WD that I had for a year, 2 died in about 3 months and I had to RMA them, no trouble with the new ones. So honestly, my best experiences have been with Seagate and Maxtor, although I'd buy WD again, mostly trouble free and their RMA service was great.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
