    Well It's happened...

I bought an Ipod Touch and I installed I Tunes. I needed an easy way to get onto the web for my commute home. I also have had first officers who have a nice weather radar app that has come in very handy some times.

Now my step daughter just said that I should "Jail Break" it. Is this like hacking it and what would the ramifications be?

I was also wondering what cool apps you guys have for these bad boys.

As with most hackable stuff (PSP, NDS, GPS, PS3,...) once you hack it, your warranty is void.

If its a software hack, you should be ok as this can be removed / reformatted. But if they catch any trace of something abnormal being installed, you will be hung by your balls.
[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

Well, let me start by saying that Jailbreaking it will mostly void your warrenty. There isn't much that it really brings you, and it's mostly for the Iphone anyways, not the Ipod Touch. Most of my apps are free... and I find them through an app called barginbin.

Turn your ITouch into a Phone.

Want to know how to make free international phone calls on your iPod touch?

Yep, it's possible -- but you need a piece of hardware and software to pull it off.

        Here's what you need.

        1. If you don't have one already, pick up a 3.5mm jack headset for your iPod touch. About halfway down the earphone cord is a tiny microphone so the person you're calling can hear you. I used one that shipped with my Blackberry Curve and it worked just fine. You can buy one for as low as $2.16 by shopping here.

        2. On your iPod touch, download the free Skype application for iPod touch/iPhone and sign up for a free account if you don't already have one. I used the same login and password as the Skype on my PC. If you have a Canadian iTunes account, however, then you probably know Skype isn't offered yet in the Great White North (for mobile phones), so try a free VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) app like iCall.

        3. Now have your iPod touch or iPhone join a wireless network, such as in your own Wi-Fi hotspot at home. You can then place calls to another Skype/iCall user for free. You don't have to pay a cent if your friends or family have a free account. With Skype, you can also buy inexpensive "Skype Out" credits to call any landline or cell phone.

Easy, no? Indeed. But keep in mind if you have a first-generation iPod touch you'll need some sort of microphone add-on in order to place calls.
I saw an article in Maximum PC on this a couple of months ago.

Just a heads up you can only call other skype users and you have to pay extra to call a land line.

I ran into a fellow pilot while I was commuting to ORD yesterday and he told me the same thing. He then gave me some information which I scribbled on a napkin. Fring and voip stunt are what you need and there are some you tube videos on how to do it. I will give it a try when I get a round to it.

Generally I love this thing and i find it very useful. As soon as my contract runs out with Verizon I'm switching. It will take about a year so maybe by then Verizon will have the Iphone and I won't have to switch but I'm getting one.

I think another year and a half the iphone will be on verizon, probably in the beginning of 2011. I bought a blackberry storm to help with the waiting but I'm really not into clicking, the itouch though is a very fun device to use.

I want an iPhone, but I refuse to get one until Apple gets a clue and stops the contracting with specific vendor and it's available on Sprint. Then I'll get one. Until then LadyBug and I are just settling for the iTouch.

The interesting thing there is sprint just started carring the MiFi so that's a possibility

The iphone is cool but I refuse to get one because of how much you have to pay per month for usage...

Hey you shouldn't be complaining Sprint has got the palm pre which in some ways is better than the iphone.

a SIM is a chip that has your EMSI and TMESI (cellular phone number and ID) and as well as your address book and some other info. If I want to upgrade phones. I pull the battery out of my current phone. SLide the sim chip out and put it into my new phone. Done. Plus with a SIM chip if I go to another country I could buy a prepaid sim chip and slip it in my phone. Now I'm making local calls. T-mobile and ATT offer phones with a SIM chip and hence I can use their services. Everyone else in the US doesn't use SIM chips
