Slow upload on one PC.

Lately my family has been complaining i have been having issues on my home network. I replaced my old DL514 with a DGL 4500 and the connection issues went away but one issue remains.

My gaming desktop has been taking over by my wife and the problem she is having is that it is painfully slow to upload pictures to her facebook. Downloading seem fine This problem is unique to this machine so I was thinking that it could be some setting somewhere for the network adapter OR possibly a slow HDD. My MB is an EVGA 780i and I have 3 Segate drives in RAID 5. I think one of my drives may be one that has a bad firmware.

Any thoughts?

Is it only Facebook that has uploading issues Duke? Because it's running a custom Javascript app to do that. You may need to update JRE, reinstall it, or clear your Java cache out.

I've noticed that facebook has been slower than normal recently... but the speed issues seem to be intermittent. Maybe try uploading during off-peak hours? Maybe run a speed test....

I will ask my wife to jot down the time of these slow uploads. I ran CC cleaner and updated java so maybe that will help.

That might be because it's probably uploading your files synchronically to the NSA...could be a bandwidth issue.

Well if it were a bandwidth thing then why is is only noticeable on this one machine? Or do you mean bandwidth from this machine?

What you could do is check the connection speed over your own network, send a file from the pc to another etc.

Or even try speedtest.net on it, cos it works via the pc your on, if there is a upload issue on the pc in general it will show up.

OK I just ran speakeasy from bot my desktop and my laptop. Both are on a wired connection.

Desktop
Download Speed: 2889 kbps (361.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 332 kbps (41.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Laptop was

2886 down

657 up

What could cause this?

funny how its near 1/2...

First check for any updated drivers.
Then check make sure its connected at the right speed, typically 100mbps
If the driver (device manager page) has settings, check its in full duplex, and any other settings that may be suspect

Might also want to check if any of your firewalls/av/etc might be an issue in this, I know my AV checks outbound traffic for suspicious activity.

No answer here, just questions.

I think Sirex's point about the 1/2 upload rate might be a critical detail. I'd lean away from suspecting the RAID, but ... Is it too obvious to say the desktop's NIC or configuration is the most likely cause? These are just some ideas to help split the problem (troubleshoot).

D-Link DGL-4500 is a very nice wireless router. Turning off the router's wireless capability can be a pain. For your up/down speed tests, did you evaluate using exactly the same hard-wired cable/connector/router port for your desktop and for the notebook (wire, not wireless)?

Have you already checked for speed differences sending a large file from desktop-to-notebook and vice versa (network, not Internet)?

Depending on the other answers, this next idea is probably a waste of time. If the speed difference is replicated on your internal network, you could check transfer speeds again after rebooting in safe mode with networking (without normal software clutter).

Somehow i missed that question.
Typically these things will use RAM to eliminate any 'slowdown' from your pc's drives etc to get a true speed.
Even thou with an IDE drive the drop in speed will be negligible seen as the file will be precached by the drive as its feeding data.
