    Blu-ray to allow legal copying

Blu-ray could be set to get a legitimate copy feature as soon as 2010, according to the head of the AACS Licensing Authority.

As reported over on Electronista, the high-definition optical disc format is set for a new revision some time in the first quarter of 2010 which will bring Managed Copy to the specification.

It's about time something like this happened.

Bout frigging time. I bet they cripple/kill it so bad that it's not worth it, at least in the first iteration. Which means that "copyright thieves" will find ways to "exploit" it so that people can make better/easier copies and there'll be a whole new round of insanity.

Legally speaking you have the right to make personal backs of anything you own. No matter what the MPAA and the RIAA are trying to tell people.

Luckily I bought DVDfab years ago. I have a license that has free upgrades for life.

Really? I know this is the case for the UK and the majority of Europe. But i thought the law was strict over there.

Mapes is right, you can make one copy of anything you have. You can even legally dl a torrent of say, a game rom, if you own that game physically.

That said, I have no reason to make blu-ray copies at the moment, so I was ambivalent when I heard this news the other day. I don't even have a BD burner yet.

Not true entirely. You have the right to make copies of media for backups. On the other hand, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act forbids you from doing anything to circumvent DRM on digital media. This is a newer law so it "trumps" the older laws allowing you to make copies as backup.

Which means that while it is legal for you to copy your blu-ray media as a backup, it is illegal for you to do so by going around or through the DRM on it. As there is no way to copy it without ripping the DRM or circumventing it, it is therefor illegal for you to make a copy.

Now, if you get a good lawyer you could probably argue your way around it with a promise to destroy copies and not do it anymore, but for the moment copyright law for these cases is screwy.

If you're not sharing and making personal use copies, the chances of getting caught for making your backups aren't high though imo.

That's what made me question it. The laws do state that you can make backups of things that you own, however you cannot break the copy protection.

Yeah it's a mess. The DMCA has one good provision. The service provider protection.

The illegality of breaking the copy protection is stupid. As it interferes with my Fair Use. Technically Fair Use still applies. However you could be charged for violating the DCMA and not Copyright Infringement.

Also the DCMA made it illegal to have any tools used for breaking copy protection. Shortly after the bill passed there was a hack where if you used a green highlighter on a cd it would somehow break the CP. Technically it is illegal under the DCMA to own a green highlighter
