I didn't see it mentioned yet, so I'll mention that system builder sites are mostly recommending a 64-bit OS. Reasons vary; I'd do it because I'd like more memory than 32-bit allows.

If you haven't already decided, here's a good summary of differences for Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946765

i7 didn't really offfer anything over the E7/8XXX chips as they were meant for servers etc. This is why gamers have them clocked to 4.5Ghz with barely any performance increase in games. I presume i5 will be the same. The i7 motherboards are also way way way over priced. So unless Intel have something up their sleeve with the new boards i expect it to be much of the same.

Juneau if u do a little research u going to see that the prices are set to match the new Phenom line of AMD which is way cheaper than i7.

I thought the main thing the i7 design accomplished was enhance performance with comparible benchmarks to higher CPU ratings of their predecessors, e.g.

              Thats nice but...

Its based on best conditions, if your using multithreaded programs your all set if your no its a waste. Mrs Cain isn't going to be gaming or running any other intensive software. A duel core would be more then enough for the next few years.

Its kind of like buying cars that will go like 200 Mph and living in the US where the fastest roads are only 70ish. So you never really need all that extra muscle. Althou on the plus side you can get to highways speeds in just a few seconds

But still more expensive than the Wolfdales which is all she will need. If you also noticed what i typed. I stated the motherboards will probably be expensive. I didn't mention the CPU's.

The motherboards with P55 chipsets are going to be are the same price level with good Phenom motherboards. And i still don't think if i make a new build i should use something that had his life. I dont know what Cain's life is going to do with her PC , but if she is using Adobe for image editing or video editing for example then Wolfdales are going to be smoked. But if he is building some sort of HTPC then he'll be fine with E8XXX

Well if the price is comparable, then it makes sense to go with the newest, bestest, and fastest...

Generally speaking, buying the cutting edge lasts you lot longer IMO.

If you plan to buy the new PC in October/November, a lot might happen until then. - So a discussion at this point is like being a fortuneteller.

You gotta be kidding me right? an E8XXX is 'fine' for a HTPC? I'm running a E2180 that does all my HTPC needs proud and with ease. My E6750 @ 3.2Ghz also handles PS with no problems what so ever. Yea, PS can use a Quadcore, but PS isn't a hard app to run unless you're dealing with some seriously high-res RAW images.

From a very simple guess i'd presume Mrs Cain will be working with simple apps. Probably things like Word, Excel etc. Maybe a little web browsing and email checking thrown in. I specced him a PC that will handle these tasks for many years to come. If her usage is going to be as i guessed then then buying latest and greatest will be a total waste, and Cain would be better off saving the money and maybe buying her something else to go along with it.

Maybe it's because i'm learning to deal with life through a recession, or speccing people that have tight budgets. Who knows. But i don't see the point in spending more than you need to.

Careful or my E8500 just might come looking for you. An e8500 oc'd to 3800mhz with no vmodding is a pretty mean lil chip. Nowadays there steppings are soo good you can pretty much buy 1 anywhere and get good OC's.
