GFX crd fan cutting off and on

Yo yo was up CLR.Haven't been on in a while sorry for that been focused on physics homework and wondering why my gfx card fan keeps going off and on.It started a couple weeks ago and it keeps overheating and then shutting down my PC.I tired to speed up the fan but that didn't work. When i first had the card i never had any problems with it at all.Worked fine then the fan just cut off once then cut back on.I have a XFX Ge Force 9600GSO,anybody know how to fix this problem?

sounds like either the fan or fan controller is going bad. You could try to monitor/control it with rivatuner, but I don't think it will do much good. You are probably going to have to replace the card.

Check to see how much dust is in the card too. Is it making any strange noises?

      +1 for rivatuner.

      Does this look like it?

i prefer evga's precision tool since you can monitor temps with it. I notice if my cards hit 90C the fans kick into jet airliner mode and the case starts to slid across my desk
Only happens when I forget to turn up the fans before starting a game.

evga precision tool works with LCD keyboards to so you can watch temps and such in real time

Ya I think when the G 300 cards come out the fans will probably be strong enough to lift my Thermaltake Armor case off the desk and threw my roof.

Maybe Gpu fans are the next evolution in powered flight.

Rivatuner also monitors temps, and works with LCD keyboards. It also can display temps on screen during games. Then there is automated fan profiles.

@snakeeater: Remove the card and see if the fan area is full of dust.

i would check for dust too. even my spu cooler will clog up from time to time.
Also, instead of just scrapping the card, take it apart and see if you cant rig a fan on it somehow. You can get a 40/60mm fan for 10$ or less. If you can just rig one up to blow over your heat sink, you may be able to salvage it.
I have an old agp card running this computer, and its fan went out, so i took it apart and rigged an 80mm fan to it.

You should be able to buy an after market fan that will fit it.

Possibilty.... but it's quite an old card now. So the chances of finding one are low.

it was some bizzare non cased fan, it was justa motor and fan somehow screwed into their heat sink. Its no big deal, i dont game on it, but still replacing a fan can be cheaper than a card

In some cases strapping a case fan to a graphics card can actually make it cooler. The plastic shroud on graphics cards that don't expel air out of the case can raise temps.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
