    Retail Computer Stores - Ripoffs?

    I was wondering, I think if you were in a pinch, and really had to get a replacement part, and instead of ordering it on NewEgg and waiting for it in the mail.

    If you went to a retail, would said product cost twice as much? I have noticed this lately with local stores.

    New egg...512 memory is like 25 bucks...while at a local store its 40 bucks (3200)

        Are you saying it's hard? Cuz my hand made SSD is doing awesome so far (It involves silicon and a pickle... don't ask.)

          Put it that way. If i want to buy the computer that i have right now. First i have to do lots of customizing in Alienware , and they still doesnt have something close to mine. And would cost me with their prices like 6-7K i made it for like 3...

          Ooooh and NO i don't make the memory modules myself.

          P.S. And there is something like home made SSD by the way. Using CF or HDSD flash cards.

            He's not asking about a whole system. He asking about a part. If I needed the part fast I would go to a Fry's type store and buy it.

              Retail stores are not ripping you off. They charge higher prices because their costs are higher. They have employees on hand who are, hopefully, trained to answer your questions and help you decide on what you want and need. You are paying for the convenience of being able to walk out of the store with the item. Most also allow you to return items if you are not happy with them. Another cost you are helping to pay for is the cost of shop lifting.

                I worked for Circuit City and although I never really bought parts from them because they were horribly overpriced (vid cards, ram, and such) even with employee discount, the towers were usually a pretty good deal. You could get a quad core system with 4-6 gigs of ram and 500-640 gigs of ram for a price that was hard to beat making it yourself. Especially when you include OS.

                I never had a use for them though because they don't have the expandability of a custom built system.

                    Micro center is the way to go if there is one near you. I have found that 75% of the time Micro is cheaper than newegg or tiger but I also like to pick out of the bargain bin

                    newegg = i7 860 $289
                    Micro = i7 860 $229

                    Newegg = i5 750 = $199 Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

                    Micro = i5 750 =$ 159 Micro Center - Intel Corporation Processors > Private Label Intel Processors

                      Micro Center FTW. I was able to pick up my Quad core CPU for a heck of a price and everywhere I turned there were cool PC parts.

                          Most of the larger chains will rip you off. Mainly due to the fact that computer noobs are their main consumer base and will pay pretty much anything.

                          Btw, you're buying PC3200? That is ancient. Time to move forward Tony.

                            Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
