    Ram upgrade question

well i traded a snowboarding/ski coat for a old laptop with xp. its slow as shit and when i checked out the specs it only has 256 ram (witch from what ive been told xp recommends at least 512 to operate) so i figured i would upgrade it to around a gig. all im using it for is the web and my photoshop cs, no gaming so i dont need anything real fast, but when i went to buy it i realized its sdram and not ddr and i cant find sdram for a laptop anywhere. tried best buy, new egg, and tiger direct. none have any...

so my question is... where the heck can i find some sdram for my por old laptop?????

also i was thinking about upgrading my desktop ddr2 ram as well (witch i use for gaming) and was wondering what the difference was between pc 4200, 5400, and 6400 was and hz and what would be best for my tower.... i have 2 gig now in it but its 2 512's and a 1 gig and i was told by a guy i work with who is a big pc gamer (and just had a alienware custom built for him for like 2500 bucks *side note *) that its not good to run 2 different size ddr2 chips caz they will fight each other plus i want to upgrade to 4 gig anyways...

thanks guys your always sooo helpful for all my computer whoos caz i can be computer dumb at times lol

There is always Crucial.com I'm sure they have some old sdram modules.

As for speed, use the fastest RAM that your motherboard accepts. The speeds are: 4200=533MHz, 5400=667MHz, 6400=800MHz, and 8500=1066MHz. You can actually have the scanner at Crucial.com scan your computer and tell you exactly what you have.

With your RAM I think your friend was talking about your memory running in dual channel mode. You can have different size modules on separate channels. Each channel should have RAM modules of the same size, this is indicated by the color of the slot on the motherboard. Example would be if the color of your slots alternated black/white, your 2x512's would go into the white and the 2x2GB would go into the black.

    Hope that helps...(and correct )

Actually if you can find a mom and pop style computer store around where you live, they will probably have a bin of old ram sticks.

This. It's pretty much a guarantee that all major stores, front and online will not stock old RAM. Outside of that there's ebay.......

Be careful of Overstock.com though. Quite a few times I have found their prices more expensive than other sites.

You'll have a tough time finding SDRAM. In addition, if you do find it it probably won't be worth buying. From what I have seen when memory gets EOL the prices go WAY up...

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
