MS SteadyState - sounds almost too good

In case you haven't heard, there are all these nasty bugs on teh intarweb, and they screw up your PC every chance they get. Home page changes, popups, verrryyy sloooooow in Windows ... all examples of what these things do to a PC.

So .. what do you do about it ?? Chances are, you know how to fix it, but what if its family members or friends ?? They always claim ignorance and drop it in your lap. And as we all know, sometimes family and friends work turns out to be non gratis - no benefits involved for you.

So Microsoft has come up with this handy dandy utility called SteadyState, which locks down the PC and won't allow modifications or changes to your settings. Does it sound like a good thing to you ? Could it possibly .. *gasp* .. WORK ??

    Take a look and see - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...s/default.mspx

Installed on a PC used primarily by kids (yep, the ones who use Limewire, IM, Facebook and browse thru .. errr, some questionable websites) do you think this would be a solution to a problem facing almost 90% of the users out there ? Anyone have experience using this utility ?? I'm curious.

Sounds like UAC or a group policy....

.. with an easier to understand GUI frontend ! I'd love to try it at work, but the network admin has told me he will do bad things to me if I test this or the MS Security Essential utility on his live network.

We have been PLEADING for a WSUS server to do Windows Update rollouts to users for MONTHS now. It would save us weeks of work over the summer.

wait.... your not at the school no more? shoot. i could see definate possibility for it there. Understanding someone else's group policy is a nightmare if you walk into the mess....

The gui front end could come in handy though...

Oh, I'm still at the the school, my friend. We have just greatly increased our workload with an additional 5 laptop carts housing a variety of portable problems. I can image a desktop lab in an hour, it takes me 3+ hours to image a cart lab.

definate win then! unless you can't block people from touching the front end without your authorization. So... we can call it a group policy editors for dummies?

I await the first call to MS of "Yea..... i steadystated myself out of my computer...."

Think i might pass this onto my sister. She has two kids and a husband that love to meddle with things a little too much.

On the note of UAC. I turned that off pretty much straight away on my Win7 install.
